I have a H&R .38-55 that has had the barrel cut off of a Target Model, so I had to resort to using a Bushnell Trophy red dot for the sights. After installing that site, it was time to get it shooting to point of aim. Four shots later that was accomplished to minute of hog (MOH). Using a 240 gr Oregon Trails bullet with 11.0 gr of Blue Dot in .375 Win and fire formed .30-30 brass at about 1200 fps, I find a soft shooting effective load.

I have shot this load out to 175 yards with good MOH accuracy, even though I was using a BSA holographic sight.

It appears that there aren't too many that are into .38-55s, but it's actually a pretty effective caliber. As I said, its brass can be made from .30-30 or .375 Win brass can be used too. The 240 gr bullet certainly has as much going for it as the 170 gr .30-30. Here's what Layne Simpson has to say about the .38-55.
