Alright folks, with Whitetail gun season approaching, I’m thinking I’ll pull out the TC Pro Hunter out this year.

I have a pet load for it. Using the 110 gn Nosler Accubond, 54.5 gn Reloader 22 and a CCI benchrest primer.

This particular load combo has given group sizes of .720 at 105 yards.

With not having either the Accubond bullet or Reloder 22 readily available, I’m back to experimenting.

So if y’all still play with the quarter bore what works for you?

Unfortunately, I no longer shoot/reload .25-06 since the rifle was returned to the rightful family owner.
    Long story...

    However...!

When I did, I distinctly remember using RETUMBO powder (back when it was plentiful) for my loads.
Looking online I was unable to find any for sale.
I also think I used 117-grain Hornady bullets, not 110-gr.
I used this powder and bullet combination for .267 Roberts for a converted/defunct Arisaka. The results were good.

I'll check my notes later tonight.

    I don't have a 25- 06 but I had a 257 Weatherby and currently a 25-284 basically a 25-06 twin I use the H powders with this one. WW 760 is the same as H414.
I use 100 grain Nosler, Hornady and Sierras

I’m thinking of trying some of that Stabal 6.5 in the 25-06.

I’ll be using either a Hornady 110 gn SP or a Barnes 100 gn TTSX bullet.

If I don’t blow my face off I’ll let you know.

Interesting, I wouldn’t have expected 4064 to work that well in this particular cartridge.

I started using 4064 way back in the 70s, when it was touted as the answer for the 30.06 and 308. It grouped better than the old 4895 and 4320, and at lower pressures. I started buying it in 8 pound containers as they were easy to get, up until Barrack got elected. It also works very well in the 7mm and 8mm Mauser, and the 7x65r.

I played with some of the newer stuff over the years, but none produced better groups or chrono results in the 06 and 308. A few of the new powders produced obvious pressure stress at lower velocity. I have found it works well in just about all the 06 prodigy, and related cases. The 25.06 is the lightest bullet weight I have used it on. I have seen the data showing you can get about 100 fps more at the same pressure, but with the groups I get its not worth messing with.

IMR4064 has been my go to powder for the 8mm Mauser & the 30-06 for quite a while.

I am considering using Accurate 4064 in the 30-06. I have been told by a few others that it works very well for them.

I did try IMR4064 in the .270 a couple of times but couldn’t get it to group worth a darn. So I never considered it for the 25-06.

One of my loading buddies tried it in a few of his smaller necked cases, all 30.06 family, and had no luck getting a good group. My 25.06 is a 20" heavy Shilen barrel on a savage action. That may have something to do with it.

That would be a great guess. The barrel on my prohunter is 28” and that may be why mine is so finicky.

    I have some H414 & W760. I haven’t tried it in mine yet.

What was the load recipe & what kind of accuracy did these powders deliver for you?

I sold the 25-06 many years ago so I only have what I marked in a manual or two. The 25-284 loads would be Hot since it's loaded hotter. It can be cranked up the mimic the 257 Weatherby tho I never have.

Ok I think I’m onto one that’ll work. This particular set of targets were shot using 55 gn of H4831sc a 100gn Barnes TTSX bullet and a Winchester Large rifle magnum primer.

One the first pic I stopped at 3 shots to let the barrel cool and take a look at what I had so far. I was pleased with the 3 shots grouping like they did.

The second target was when I fired the last 2 remaining rounds left. The one in the center of the target is my flyer. It was totally me, I knew I threw it soon as I broke the shot. But it hit center so I guess I can’t be too upset.

I still have 2 batches of rounds to test out. But I’m happy that I found at least one that’ll work for me just fine.
