I think it depends the general vernacular of the prison in which one finds oneself. I always though both served as nouns and verbs. Maybe Yankees call it a shiv and Southerners call it a shank? Or vice versa. All I know is I don’t want to get stabbed by that knife. Or shanked by that shiv. OR shiv’d by that shank.
