Dove season is usually as hot as a pistol so the coolest lightest camo gear is in order. Texas deer seasons might not always get so chilly so I figure it smart to dress in layers. When it's chilly out of doors I always like to sport a Pendleton wool shirt as my grandfather always did out on the party boat fishing. Maybe some ideas from folks here. Some here may hunt deer in Tx while others might head to colder, northern states in November. I figure much of the same stuff one hunts deer can also be used to hunt fox, rabbit, bear, cougar, bobcat, elk, moose, antelope, buffalo, pheasant, grouse, coyotes and partridges. I think ducks and geese usually require waders and stuff for wet environments. One of my biggest concerns is gloves that won't interfere with the operation of the gun. As a soldier, the mil-spec leather black issue work gloves and wool liners were great for firing M16's and other US weapons. They weren't waterproof for rain, though. Drying them by the heater vents in army trucks was a common affair in the field. I'm on the market for a Savage 99. The lever loop is slim as is most lever jobs. The Winchester Model 1892 large loop carbine is what John Wayne sported in True Grit ("Fill your hands, you son of a ....!!!"). That fat lever is great for any thick hunting gloves for cold weather under the sun. Will issue army work gloves be slim enough for regular slim levers on rifles? I think clothing is one of the most important things to consider when playing out of doors. If you freeze to death in a deer stand or sweat like a pig on a dove stool you will know what I mean.

Just looking on Google for pics of deer hunters in Texas the usual garb is camo with baseball hats or cowboy outfits complete with Stetsons. Blaze orange where the law says you gotta put it on. This is what seems in fashion these days. I care more about functionality afield than fashion though. The buffalo plaid looks so Norman Rockwell indeed.

Here are some clothing ideas of my own for most American hunting and most of it I found listed on amazon.com "for a song":

Ive never worn the elmer fudd getup before but I have seen some old timers dressed like that while hunting in Pennsylvania during rifle season. Honestly if you are sitting in a raised box blind (alot of hunting in Texas is done this way), it doesnt really matter what you are wearing except for when getting to and from the blind.

But if you wanted to bow hunt I would think you would want something a bit different. If you are willing to consider a more modern camo approach, I have a much longer post to post then.

When I was younger I over complicated it. Now I just use mossy oak wear. Typically found at Walmart with a heavy discount from last season. Yes, I’m a cheap sob.

Years ago, when I still had the time to go hunting, I wore jeans and usually a long sleeved shirt with whatever appropriate coat or jacket was needed for the weather. I would usually wear browns or earth-toned colors.

Have never owned any camo clothing in my life, aside from a few ball caps.

Many animals are color blind or color deficient with their eyesight, but have excellent eyesight for any type of movement.

Obsolete military BDUs & generally from thrift stores. = I recently bought 4 sets in great condition for 5.oo per set of trousers/blouse.
(As someone else said, Texas weather is so variable, even on the same day, that I have several "layers" available to add/subtract.= On COLD days, I wear SILK at the skin with 2 or more layers of wool over the silk & whatever outerwear that seems wise.)

Obviously, IF "bean field hunting" from a high-stand, IF hunting on HOT days OR on COLD days where the blind is likely heated, hunting clothes can be really minimal.

Me personally, I would probably wear modern camo in a duck field or duck blind and certainly wear it on a dove stool. Doves detect movement real well. The Elmer Fudd outfit has that classic black/red checked pattern. I think the logic was in the old days that the checked pattern would break up your outline while the red would make you visible in the woods to other hunters since animals are color blind.

The past couple of seasons I have been using some really nice drake non-typical I got at academy post season. Dirt cheap too. I think it was $60 for all of it and its normally $2-300. Its worth taking a look there around feb-march after the general season is all over with. I am actually on the drake non-typical instagram page with my axis deer I shot this past season. They make really good waterfowl stuff and their white tail gear aint too shabby either.

When I hunt in PA and NY usually in December-January, I have my midwayusa "Fatman suit". Its basically a sleeping bag with arms and legs and its perfect for long hours in a tree stand against the brutal northern cold. Not built for stalking although it is fairly quiet for how bulky it is. I am just at 6' 1" and 210 pounds and the XL is perfect on me. I have also used this in north Texas when we have freak freezing days during the season.

This upcoming season I have decided to go with something a bit more high quality. I am turning up the heat on my hunting this year so I felt it was worth the investment as I plan on bowhunting/stalking more. Quality camo is just like quality optics or a quality gun. Hard to go back to the cheap stuff after you have used it. These guys are awesome and while they are more geared to hunting in the west, their camo is excellent.

I guess it really just depends what type of hunting you are going to do

Its more of a fashion statement for me, or a right of passage for my son. He shot his first 2 deer last season and i gave him a long sleeve camo shirt from academy, and a camo down jacket from midway. They didnt even match. He also wore his boy scout pants with his hiking boots.

I wear a camo shirt and my army bottoms and army boots with wool socks and any jacket to match the weather.

I do have some wool bibs that i picked up on clearance years ago. Super excited to take them on a late season elk hunt i was drawn for.

The only time I wear camo is when I'm turkey hunting. Everything else,I'm wearing blue jeans/shorts & t-shirts unless it actually gets cold, then I'll wear a jacket.

It's funny that camo only became popular over the past few decades. It's a multi-billion dollar business that urban hunter's fell for.

It definitely depends on what you are hunting. Good gear costs but it keeps my ass warm or cool no matter where I am hunting at in the country. Also buying stuff out of season allows me to get it at my cheap bastard prices

Never really mattered what we wore deer hunting, we were driving around in a vehicle until we saw them.
I shot an axis deer from a side by side this past season and it was the most fun Ive had in a long time. I got to shoot a few gray fox as well.

I wear whatever I normally wear that I don't mind getting a little dirty. Pretty much all my hunting is on private land where I'm one of three people with a gun, and all the blinds are in separate directions and face away from each other, and we don't walk outside of the path to the blind without having come back and checked in to clear and open the area. I'm a little safety-obsessive, so I'll wear a camo hat out if it's cold enough for a hat, and turn it inside out for the orange when I'm walking to a blind, but I've never encountered anyone who wasn't coming out specifically to find me.

Yeah the only reason I had camo originally was for paintball. Now I'll keep it for stalking deer or turkeys, but we don't get to do that much.

Hey popcorn eater, stay out of it.

I only hunt birds. For early dove season, a camo tee shirt, and shorts if possible. I've got dogs to tear through the brush or cactus to retrieve them. Quail hunting is more genteel, and they don't care if you're wearing camo or not. Orange hat, orange shooting vest, and layers to keep me warm. Cleaning birds in a frozen stock tank gets chilly.

These were actual hunting cars, most of them hand made, from various vehicles cut down.
One of the most memorable was a 70ish Tornado, back in 1970.

Hunted quail, over dogs, from some of the same vehicles.
The ones with seats on the front.
But, usually just walking, over dogs.
