Got a couple free gas cans. Trying to refurbish them to original order. I tried to do research on paint but couldn’t find much. I sanded, primed and finished the first coat of paint. I used Rust-Oleum “high performance enamel” primer and paint. I’m wondering if two coats of this paint will be enough to hold up to gas spillage or should I do a clear coat?

Look awesome. But honestly, not for sure how any air drying paint will hold up to gasoline spills. Remember most spray paints are oil based. Gasoline would act similar to a paint thinner.

Just guessing, when they were manufactured they were either used a baked on enamel paint, or a hardner catalyzed paint for the outside.

Just an idea, but maybe if you could find some spray can epoxy paint?

I’ll look for an epoxy clear coat. I could also buy one of those yellow funnels for “safety-can”. that would mitigate spillage

Q: Are these being refurb’d for use or display. If their never going to see gas again.....1
