His only options were 1.) Stop the car 2.) Make the obnoxious bitch into a speed bump or 3.) Go forward and drive thru Chipotle - he chose the more sensible solution of stopping.

False imprisonment makes option 4 viable: keep inching the car back. The mom wasn't going to let herself get run over. She can beat on the car all she wants as long as she moves.

If they expected gunfight they should have hauled ass over the instigators & gotten out of there.

A functional vehicle is always an advantage over people on foot.

In most instances I totally agree with you. But the dynamics of the situation changed. The couple were in the vehicle, leaving, and the mother got behind the vehicle and started beating, or slapping the vehicle.

Even an unarmed person, under certain circumstances could be considered a threat. Remember, the wife is pregnant. Not likely she could go hand to hand with the black mother. Getting into a physical altercation with the black mother, could lead to being a danger to the unborn child. So given that, I think the mother did the right thing. She was protecting herself, her husband and her child.

And right before the husband got into the vehicle the mother did threaten him with bodily harm. So the threat was there IMO.

Yes, in some circumstances. Unless you're talking about a vehicle that has been modified with armor panels and ballistic glass, a typical civilian auto is very poor at stopping bullets. If you are concerned about incoming rounds at close range it may be a superior move to get out and get distance or to put more material between you and the incoming rounds. That doesn't apply to this scenario. Would've liked to see the white lady attempt to put a vehicle between her and the black lady, but I'd guess the white lady isn't a cop, a competition shooter, or a soldier so she's probably not had much training on the use of cover or concealment. She did do a good job of giving commands, keeping her cool with her gun drawn, and ultimately, she didn't have to pull the trigger.

They were attempting to de-escalate and leave and the "mother" stood behind them, blocking their path. Hubby didn't at that point see it as a lethal force situation, so he stopped. His only options were 1.) Stop the car 2.) Make the obnoxious bitch into a speed bump or 3.) Go forward and drive thru Chipotle - he chose the more sensible solution of stopping. When they started beating on the vehicle I'm going to guess, since we haven't heard a statement from them yet - that the wife's fear of having violence committed upon them was ramped up. Given the way the world has been of recent, that's a pretty good assumption. Don't know who is armed, don't know when they're going to start shooting.

Woman is pregnant so she's got that extra level of fear and tension going on. She's not gonna risk her baby getting hurt so she goes Mama Bear and pulls out her gun and did a pretty damn good job of moving them back while retreating. To the credit of the stupid 15 year old who started the shit - she was trying to talk her mom back once she realized that the Caucasian couple was armed and they were only one stupid move away from decorating the pavement with blood. "Don't move" was heard over and over from the kid to the mom.

I hope for their sake that hubs did call 9-1-1 also to get their side recorded, and that Chipotle's security cam footage didn't magically get corrupted or lost. Right now all we see is the vantage point from the instigators of the incident, edited down for public consumption to make the whites look bad (and it really doesn't do that, IMO) - I think the white couple had reason to be afraid for their safety or their lives, and I think the response by the lady was reasonable and justifiable.

There are certainly things that could've been done differently, but hind sight is always 20/20.

Thanks to John Galt for linking that video. Everyone should watch this video. It answers many questions that were brought up by members that posted on this thread. Yes, it's almost an hour long, but well worth the time to sit back and watch it. I highly recommend watching the video.

That's a good interview that John linked. I didn't even think about the newer cars will automatically stop to prevent a collision when backing up.

It makes sense why they stopped. the back-up sensors detected someone behind the vehicle and disabled it. Explains why they exited the vehicle. Had they just driven away, they would have been guilty of a felony for leaving the scene of an accident. At that point, they didn't know.

The interview brings a lot of context to what happened and why.

So I definitely don't want a car that won't let me override it and keep going even when the car thinks I should stop.

I cannot believe these folks are charged with anything. The prosecutor should be the one worried about her life & hiding from the mob.

Yep, no nanny car for me. I will do my own driving, thank you.

On a Ford you can over-ride that crap by just stepping on the accelerator. And you also have the option to totally disable, alert w/no action taken.

correct! and Ford doesn't get sued because someone was getting ambushed and an attempted block maneuver could not be avoided.
