Weasel, are you dead set on an AR carbine?

If not, check out the Kel-Tec SUB2000 carbine. A friend if mine has one he got last year. I have shot it several times, and it's an awesome carbine and not very expensive. It folds in half and is much more compact than an AR carbine. He keeps his in a bag that looks like a case for a laptop.
16.5", kinda long for the wife & not a SBR so restrictions. Can u suggest something else, possibly easier to find, preferably 9mm? I

You’re not looking for an SBR which incurs a different ATF tax stamp than a suppressor, with attendant cost and wait.

It seems something in the AR pistol is what your most likely interested in. With your budget, it’s going to hard to find an alternative, but the CZ scorpion pistol would be a contender with more $, as would the soon to be released PSA MP5 clone.

The SUB2000 does come in 9mm. has a 16" barrel. Folds in half. My friend's us in 40 S&W, and muzzle blast isn't bad in the least. Very easy to shoot, lightweight, and quite accurate.

Going back to your OP, you don’t know what you don’t know. I’d really encourage you to think about the following things.

For range practice, most people aren’t going to go thru more than a 30-rd mag at a time as a new shooter, especially women. They’re going to have ear pro and eye pro, so noise isn’t that much of a consideration. Electronic ear pro does a great job to make things quiet. You can easily leave a set of e-pro on the rifle for inside the home usage. It takes three seconds to turn on and don.

Consider the likelihood that this weapon is actually going to be employed in the house...it’s low...use that time to save for a suppressor and the tax stamp...one usage with no ear pro isn’t going to cause total and permanent loss of hearing. At night, I’m more worried about the muzzle flash, etc. from the brakes that are popular nowadays. If you don’t have a suppressor, a flash hider and the ear pro are my preferred setup.

Here’s some light reading in flash hiders.

    https://www.pewpewtactical.com/best-ar15-flash-hiders/

Even with a flash hider will still produce a bright blinding flash in a dark house. Even the article you linked states that too.

"What you’re left with isn’t a totally invisible flash—and if you’re running 5.56 in a less than 12” barrel you’ll still have a sizeable fireball—but the results from a good flash hider will be remarkably better than a bare barrel or a default A2 flash hider."

I owned one once and didn't like it at all. It was small and compact but I just didn't care for it.

Well aware. The OP has an $800 all in budget. An FH is loads better than a brake, because he ain’t getting a suppressor l.

Congrats. You can significantly reduce the loaded weight by going to 20rd magazines.
