Since we'll be new Texans in about 22 days, I'll need to switch over my DL and vehicle registration - would like to get that out of the way ASAP as I want to get my LTC ASAP too - are the DPS driver license offices open, and what about the tax offices for vehicle registration? Shouldn't have any issues getting the inspection out of the way PDQ, my pop has a reliable mechanic he uses for his stuff that should get me in right quick. I just don't want to be in limbo for God knows how long with an Oregon DL, Oregon plates, trying to show proof of Texas residency for things.

Had to call for an appointment for the wife at our mega ctr. and have to wait until
the 29th to get in for her DL.

I'll probably call then about a week before we leave and see if I can't get an appointment set for not long after we get down there - did you go to the mega ctr in Spring?

For now, you don't have to worry about registering the vehicle, but you do need the state inspection.

Temporary Waivers: Please read the following information carefully

On March 13, 2020, Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation, declaring a state of disaster for all counties in Texas due to the threat of COVID-19. Governor Abbott also issued a statement on March 16, 2020, granting a temporary extension to obtain initial registration, renewal of registration, vehicle titling, and renewal of a permanent disabled parking placard. Governor Abbott also granted a temporary extension for an individual with an expired 30-day temporary permit to obtain another permit or Texas registration.

    • In March 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Abbott issued a temporary waiver from the requirement to renew registration. ..
    • The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles will make an announcement when this waiver is no longer in effect.
    • Following the announcement that the waiver is no longer in effect, you will have 60 days from the date of the announcement to have your vehicle inspected and complete the registration process. For example, if the announcement is made August 1, you would have 60 days from August 1 to come into compliance.
    • We will post this information on TxDMV.gov and on our social media channels.
    • The requirement to obtain a passing vehicle inspection prior to registration has not been waived.
    • Please see www.TxDMV.gov/covid-19 for more information and answers to frequently-asked questions.

    • As pertains to driver's licenses:

    • New Texas residents can legally drive with a valid, unexpired driver license from another U.S. state, U.S. territory, Canadian province, or qualifying country for up to 90 days after moving to Texas. Visit the Department's webpage How to apply for a Texas Driver License for more information. To schedule an appointment to obtain a Texas driver license or identification card, visit Driver License Services

Go online and make appointment for DL.
Be dang sure to bring a birth certificate, they are even required for a renewal now and it can’t be a copy.
My wife went through this last week, we had a heads up from a friend on bringing the Birth certificate, sheese, she has had a dl for 40 years.
Sure enough they were turning people away if they did not have one, and making them get another appointment.
They scan the bc into the system, good ole big brother.

How many times do they need a damn birth cert? Pretty retarded, but thanks for the heads up. I had to show it about 10 years ago to renew when Oregon upped their ID standards, but then the dipshits in the state capital tried giving DL's out to illegals AFTER a voter referendum to NOT issue gov't ID or DL to illegals.

I've heard that. However, the document checklist generated on their website, for me at least, didn't say I needed to bring it. Apparently a passport is good enough.

Anybody here have experience with them requiring a birth certificate even if you're presenting a passport?

All this documentation is to make damn sure you are in the United States legally. It's well worth any inconvenience IMHO

They will accept either BC or (unexpired) passport.

I just renewed mine online without a birth certificate. They sent a letter saying to send a 10 buck check with the letter in and they will send you a new DL with the Real ID star. Had to be done before Oct 2020.

ETA: That was for a replacement and not a straight renewal. Mine expires in 2022.

It's almost first. Make sure you have a TX insurance card. We took our (existing) WA card for the initial inspection and it was a short visit.

When you go to DPS, make sure you have EVERY piece of documentation you can think of. And then bring more. They demanded that my wife bring certified copies of her (previous) divorce decrees to follow her name changes. Some went back over 10 years. They initially didn't ask us for SS cards, but did on a followup visit. We didn't have for my wife, but luckily had another doc that showed her number, and they accepted that.

It took a ridiculous amount of docs to get it done. Birth certificates, too. The DL from another state meant nothing to them. Bring everything.

Well, since I don't know of anyplace in Texas that will legally inspect your vehicle without a valid insurance card, it doesn't really matter where you get the inspection done. Rules and stipulations might be different for the Tax Assessor's office.
