Since the summer is going to be a bust for a vacation and the kids are pretty bummed, I’m thinking a week on a lake somewhere. Gonna go with Labor Day week as hopefully some schools have started and it’s less crowded. We homeschool so we have some flexibility. I was watching some YT earlier and one guy I watch just had a trip to Lake Travis and that looks really nice which got me thinking about this topic.

Assuming the beer flu insanity has subsided I’d like a resort with pools, a spa and available fishing, bonus points for jet ski rentals. A nearby range I could stretch my legs at would be nice too. With four young kids geared towards them is the goal. Within 3 hours or so drive time of College Station will be our limit.

The YT guy I was watching earlier seemed to be at Lakeway Resort and Spa on Lake Travis. That seems nice but what else do folks recommend?

For the Highland Lakes chain, look at Horseshoe Bay on Lake Marble Falls. Thats a constant level lake, whereas Travis fluctuates and can get pretty empty by end of a dry summer. Right now, Travis is sitting at 80%, 12ft below full, which is pretty good.

If you go to lake Travis, you might want to keep the kids away from hippy hollow.
That is unless you like to swim and sun in the raw. I haven't been there in years, but I heard some people still hang out there.

I you have not made reservations yet, do it soon. Everything around N. Texas that is close to a lake is staying mostly booked up. With capacity cut to 50% even at state parks.

Anyone done Volente resort on Lake Travis?

I haven’t overnighted, and it’s been decades...Volente is on the north shore of Travis. The biggest takeaway with anywhere on Travis is that Travis not constant level; right now it’s just below 80% full.

I’ve taken a couple dive trips in that area, and I’ll just say the water is usually not very clear...3-4ft visibility is not uncommon. That may be less of an issue this year with the reduced traffic on the lake.

Water temps are usually pretty warm in the swimming depths, and the water park uses commercial water, so you’ve got that going for you.

If you want to get out and about to have a break from the resort, it’s kind of thin until you decide to drive 15 mins or so.

Compared to Lakeway, it’s less pretentious and more family oriented, which isn’t a bad thing.

Lakeway resort is $$$$. The facility is nice, as is the pool. Austin traffic to/from is a real pain. The Oasis on lake Travis is an good restaurant with a spectacular view of the lake. Bonus is no mosquitoes to speak of due to the bats. Overall it is meh from me.

"The lake" was my passion back in the 1980s.
After a few bad weekends, we swore off memorial day and labor day weekends on the lake. It ain't safe. Honestly, it wasn't much fun either. Like I-35 at 7:45 am tomorrow.
