On a weekend there should have been "duty crew" on board that would have been on "watch". Most fires occur in the engine room. Ive done several ship board firefighting training exercises in the training building. They usually try to fight it with hose. I have a feeling it got out if control before they could get everyone out of the space to secure the compartment to use halon.

Hopefully they will account for everyone and all will be in good health.

On another note: Seems to me, as uninformed as I may be, that the Navy has not learned much since Pearl Harbor. All their ducks in a row like that - even Elmer J. Fudd could wipe em out.

National City docks, used to be destroyer row. Forward of engine room so probably welder hit a fuel storage tank. Even empty they are very flammable. All the hoses, wires and construction stuff gets in the way of closing off. Probably D.C. crew on shore so contractors are F.D. Halon is very harmful to personnel. IIRC only used around JP fuel.

Yeah I was told (third-hand from my buddy’s brother) that they’re using water.

And pumping water off the ship is equally as important as putting water on the fire, and it’s a challenge due to the sheer volume.

Peacetime military is safer than wartime but not always. Back in '89 or so the Navy had a safety stand down for 48 hours due to a series of accidents including a crash on the USS Lexington.

Thanks and good work, to those who still volunteer to serve. If a Mainah is someone who stays the whole winter in Maine and a Mainiac is someone who stayed the whole winter in Maine then still lives there, what do you call someone who served their enlistment in the service and did another?
