for carry? P229. Just as a range toy? P226. If you're thinking "cheap" carry gun and you are looking at Sig classics, you're looking at .40s. Great thing is that its an easy conversion if you decide you want to try 9mm or .357Sig in that platform.

I have a 229 in 40 and like it alot, it very accurate. More concealable than the 226, but I think there are some cool upgrades available for the 226.

I had a chance to buy a Made in Germany 228 3 or 4 years ago for about $400 and I passed on it because my gun fund was depleted. I’m still kicking myself. It felt great in my hand.

I’ve since learned that you just find a way to get it done when one of those opportunities arises.

I have picked up many of the p229's over the past 5 years for very cheap as departments migrated from 40 SW to 9mm. They are all very good carry and HD guns. I will admit they are about my limit in size and weight for concealed carry, plan on wearing a sturdy holster and belt. Like someone else noted, they are very very accurate. I would stock up on PD trade in defense ammo while it is still cheap, you can still find 50 round boxes of HST or Gold Dots for under $20 per box.

I have not held or shot the P229, but my P226 in 40 S&W is a very nice gun that's easy to shoot, and to shoot well. The fact that the US Navy Seals chose to carry the P226 should tell you how good of a gun it is.

It is not well suited to conceal carry, but it was never designed to be a concealable gun. It is a full sized service pistol. For home defense, open carry, or just having fun on the range, it will be an excellent gun.

To be honest, there isn't a huge difference between the two. The P229 would be better suited for concealed carry, but not by much! A few ounces, about half an inch shorter barrel and just a little less capacity.

    Both are excellent pistols.

Yeah, looking at pictures of it, it looks like a relatively beefy gun. It's not going to conceal like a sub compact. It wouldn't be my first choice for conceal carry.

You handled my Astra A100 that weekend. Remember us comparing mine to your Sig. The A100 is modeled after the Sig P228, which is very similar to the P229.

The A100 was one of my first carry pistols years ago. Yesm very heavy pistol, but solid as a brick wall! And almost as heavy!

Comparing those two pistols is "Splitting hens-teeth".
    (Yes, that IS a thing)

    Hold them both.
    If possible shoot them both.

    I've had both.
Somehow I ended up with two P226s.
    They fit my hand.
With my eyes closed I'd unlikely be able to tell the difference.

Only you know what fits your hand.

If you plan on conceal carrying a pistol, ounces and fractions of inches do make a huge difference. Even the P229 is a heavy pistol to carry all day long.

P228 has the best balance in my opinion. The P229 feels a little top heavy due to the beefy stainless steel slide. I still like them though.

The P228 and the P series preceded it, had folded and welded slides. the P229 and latter went to milled steel slides, to accommodate the 40S&W cartridges they started offering.

OP didn’t mention the 228. But if he did I would suggest that one. Great pistol.
