I have reminded myself I'd rather be a good witness than a dead or jailed hero, I am not a hero nor do I want to become one; yet, I have been carrying additional self-defense equipment, have my head on a swivel, I have put myself into a higher level of situational awareness and a mindset geared toward avoiding trouble but yet defending myself should it come to that. I also have been doing things like making sure my phone is always charged, am changing batteries in my flashlight more often than necessary (assuring freshness), am keeping at least a half tank of gas in my car instead of letting it go to 1/4 before filling up, have extra water and food in my vehicle, have enough cash on hand should banks close or ATMs be destroyed and so on. I plan to avoid problematic areas known to me and if I should unknowingly enter a problem area and become aware of danger I plan to get out ASAP without confrontation if possible. Listening to news radio/talk shows while driving around instead of Pandora for music. Not much different than usual but certainly I am at a higher level of awareness and preparedness during these volatile times.

I have to wonder, what will this violent upheaval do to already diminished ammo and firearm supplies. I am guessing another run on whatever is available and yet higher prices. I imagine those who do not have sufficient equipment or supplies during this mess may want to stock up as best they can in the event the violent rioting and looting comes their way.

I'm avoiding going into Dallas or the larger suburbs even more than I tended to already. I also carry more spare mags than usual, and since I've started needing a cane in the last few months I bought one that'll make a handy weapon should it be needed (but I did that long before the current bullshit that's going on). I've always tended to have my head on a swivel and had a low level of trust for my fellow man.

I was in San Antonio this past weekend when everything went to pot. I took the beltway around Houston to get home in stead of taking 45 through downtown.
I considered taking 59 into town but decided I’d take my chances that there wouldn’t be riots at noon...
I’m in a suburb so I’d be surprised to see anything happen close to me.
I’m fully prepared to protect my house for any circumstance anyway
I’m more concerned about this storm in the gulf personally

Am I the only one surprised that so many places have opted to let the rioters do whatever they want? I did see some pics of Korean store owners sitting on the roof with rifles - and nobody robbing/looting/burning those places. Maybe with the bad economy they think they can collect more from insurance. I just don't know.

That is not correct with regard to riots and civil commotion (a form of civil unrest by larger group of people than in a riot).

This piece describes the coverage somewhat and as it notes and can be found elsewhere, civil unrest losses are covered for the crap going on currently in both homeowners and business policies.

Another source saying much the same and another. This one is CA specific but probably the same in most other states.

So what does that mean - insurance rates will be skyrocketing by next year at the latest.

Didn’t the owner of the twin towers get a giant insurance pay out?

    To All,

Personally, I'm staying OUT of the MESS downtown & don't stick my nose into what I regard as CRAZINESS & LUNACY.
(90% of what is going on here has ZILCH to do with George Floyd or his murder. = Most is about STEALING things & committing vandalism.)

I've been outside TWICE today. = Once for a full tank of gas & the other time to a suburban HEB for necessaries.

Climb our high fence, break into my cottage & suffer a gunshot wound to the K5 area.

    yours, satx

Haven’t done anything different (I’m retired). Rarely make trips out that aren’t necessary to begin with. Have no reason to go into “downtown” areas [Dallas]. Pretty well “armed to the teeth” anyway - no change there! It’s Texas so I’m ready/willing/able to protect my home/property.

Bad cops have been arrested and jailed. Time for the Justice system to run it’s course. The rest of it is just lawlessness. George Floyd’s death is not what’s going on here!

As has been pointed out innumerable times, the ‘black community’ is really quite schizoid over this stuff. Meanwhile in Chicago alone (year to date, thru May): 1,212 shot (of which 225 killed) and 72% blacks. That’s almost 180 black homicides (some, not killed by guns). Where’s the outrage nationally over these kinds of numbers - especially if cities other than just Chicago are counted? Say what? [Source: heyjackass.com]
