Planning on buying an 870 base model because I am cheap and can upgrade it as I become less cheap. Don't presently own a shotgun so this will be my first one.

The Remington 870 Express is their most basic model.
The finish is poor and the action is gritty.
The Maverick is he most basic shotgun of the Mossbergs. It has the same problems.
The Mossberg 500 lineup is much better than the first two.
The Remington 870 Wingmaster is better yet.

As previously mentioned quality doesn't come cheap.

I own an 870 Express. I have owned three of them; gave one to my son and sold the other when I needed money. Less than wonderful finish but durable enough and as for the action it is not at all gritty nor was it when first new but that was many moons ago. The other two I owned were much more recent - no problems with either and that includes not having a gritty action. I like them. Other folks like the Mossbergs. It's a toss up, I think.

I almost forgot, I also used to own an 870 Wingmaster but sold it because I was broke not long after getting married. Lots of seller's remorse over that one, sold it for a song.

The difference between a Remington and a Mossberg is not enough to bother about. With pump guns you can work the action on the one you are taking home. don't like don't buy it
    We internet experts know.
An 870 Express bounced around my trunk for 2 decades or so wrapped in towels. Works if anything better today than ever. But 12 gauge has become too rough, so now its a safe queen. Best $200 spent on a gun I never had any fun with. Actually a bit more I added a folding stock and tube extender. I hate that folding stock, it's painful.
But of course being an internet expert I'm not biased.

I own a few Mossbergs and a few 870s. While quality can be a toss up, there is a difference in the slide release and safety.

The 870 is more natural for me, while I have to awkwardly twist and roll my wrist to activate the slide/pump release on the Mossberg.

Also while the Mossberg safety is on the tang, it is ambidextrous and natural to operate. But, it’s freaking plastic! Mine broke from normal use. I have heard that there are metal aftermarket ones.

The 870 safety is on the trigger guard and quite natural if your right handed.

    Get a maverick 88.
They sell them with 2 barrels, one 18.5 and a general purpose long, maybe it has a choke.

If you buy the combo barreled set of the Maverick, I'm not sure about the 18.5" barrel having a choke. The one I bought years ago with the 18.5" barrel didn't have a choke, but the one I have cirrently with the 26" barrel has a choke.

    DoubleDuty,

The 3 different pump-guns that I like in order are:
    1. ITHACA Model 37,
    2. Remington Model 870
    &
    3. Any of the Mossberg 500 series.

ALL of those with an 18-20 inch barrel with outlast you, if given even minimal care.

Because I'm a "wrong-handed sort of guy", I prefer the Model 37, though right now my house defense shotgun is a "well-used" ex-CCPD Police Magnum Remington 12-gauge riot-gun, that I bought from GT Distributors in Austin, CHEAP.
(It needed a general cleaning, lubrication & the wood refinished but for <150.oo, I could not resist it.)

    yours, satx

Look for an 870 Poice Magnum. Mine was very affordable as the local Sheriff was upgrading their armory and letting ‘em go for a couple bills.

    mohawk600,

GT Distributors often has GOOD USED 870 riot guns & sometimes ITHACAs for 200.oo or sometimes less.
CHECK them out for a GOOD used shotgun.

WHEN I find a Model 37 riot-gun, I'll sell someone here my 870 riot-gun that I bought from GT & refurbished, for 200.oo = It will likely outlast all of us.

    yours, satx

BTW.....I and my brother got a couple of nice RRA tactical ARs from GTs for REALLY cheap....I believe they came out of RR SWAT. Nice $1200 retail guns for a song. Haven't been there for awhile since after surgery and being out of commission since Dec. my funds have been limited.
