trying out some IMR 4064 and I'm seeing charge weights all over the place.

I normally use varget but good luck finding it half the time.

Any of y'all use this powder?

4895 was my go to .308 & .416 powder. 180 grain Combined Technology ballistic tips worked fine with my 168 grain zeroed scope. Killed lots of critters in Africa with it, including the baboon.

I quit reloading .308 some years ago, but I did use 4064, and still do for .30-06. I found 4064 to be a very good powder for those calibers. Some of the articles I copied into my load book recommend using a slightly slower powder like 4350 for bullets over 150 gr. I don't have any good load recommendations, as that rifle was peculiar and didn't behave well. (Remington 700 BDL). It liked heavy bullets and low velocities, and until I glass bedded it, I had a lot of problems with rounds "walking" as the barrel heated or cooled. Great looking rifle, but had that defective safety (that would randomly fire when you clicked it off), and was too fussy with loads. Going through some very hard times (divorce, layoff, car wreck, dog died, etc.), I sold it and let somebody else curse his luck for buying it.

Varget is not always the best powder, but it seems to be a very good powder for a wide range of cartridges. If you lock into one powder, then you keep running into problems when it's not available. It's good to experiment and find a couple of options for each caliber. The .308 has been around a long time and people have loaded just about every possible powder in it, so load data is widely available.

IMR 4350 is a great powder for the 308 as well. One of the things I like about the 4350, is that it's very versatile and works quite well in lots of cartridges. Probably about 80% of my rifle cartridges of some loadings, use 4350 in them. It's one of my most used rifle powders.

    AKMike,

While I do NOT currently own a .308, I own & hunt with a Remington Model 760 in the very similar .300 Savage.

38-40 grains of IMR4064 should be FINE in any modern BA, pump or SA rifle/carbine in .308 BUT I wouldn't try that load in a Savage Model 99.

    just my OPINION, satx

Used 4064 with 175’s for years with extremely good results in long range shoots.
Out of curiosity how many grains are you loading? Trying to decide where I want my ladder load to start as we speak.

Using LC brass so I'm thinking 41-42 in tenths to start out.

Should be safe according to the books, from what I remember checking case capacity I'll need a drop tube for anything over 41.5

It sounds like you are in the ballpark. When I test I like to cover a few grains difference and go up by 3 tenths just so I cover more ground. I would start at 40 and test to 41.5 personally.

I shoot 5 shot groups though and then fine tune and test again.

If you are running a true ladder test then one round every tenth is the way to go while using a chronograph and shooting at least 300 yards.

As others have stated, I've used 4064 with 168gr Match Kings and LC brass out of my M1A and had good success.

    YMMV.

    Good Iuck!

ETA: No experience with heavier projectiles mentioned in OP.
