Walked up on this one while out looking for turkeys this morning. Any idea what type it is? When I turned around, there was another on a log. Then a timber rattler went across the road in front of me on way home.

    to All,

I do NOT know if this is TRUE or NOT, as I was not present but a neighbor said this afternoon that they killed 2 "little brown copperheads" in their back yard Sunday about 45 minutes apart.
One was about 1-1.5 foot long & the other "just a little less than 2 feet".

BOTH were "pointed out" by the family Cocker Spaniel & were "dispatched with a garden hoe".

    yours, satx

Rat snakes aren’t harmless. It’s been well documented that they can cause sudden onset evacuative bowel syndrome as well as a multitude of heart problems, especially if found unexpectedly.

It is some kind of juvenile rat snake
    Yes, looks like it.
Trans-Pecos Rat Snake? Nah, after looking at pics online, more likely a Gray Rat Snake. They are good snakes. Will help control mice and rats. Shoulda brought it home.

View attachment 211147 These fuzzy little fuckers are horrible.
Worst pain I have ever experienced.
Asp caterpillar. Less than 1/2” long. Working in back yard I felt a bug of some kind crawling on my neck. Swatted it. Instantaneous blinding pain. Dropped to my knees and curled up on the ground in fetal position. Could not move for almost 10 minutes. Dogs were in freak out mode seeing me like that.
    Hurt for days.

Super poisonous to humans and deadly to dogs

Eeesh, a whole family of "bad snakes" around your house doesn't sound pleasant in the slightest. Makes me glad I broke my boy of the habit of picking up random snakes a few years ago - we used to live out on the edge of a small town, had a shaded back yard with a big patch of ivy. We had a mouse infestation, which lead to a snake infestation. My son was 4 at the time, and his grandparents used to watch him while mama & I were both working. He scared the bejesus out of grammy by bringing a bucket of snakes to her once. No venemous snakes in our area there - but to a lady who doesn't like snakes, that didn't much matter.

I'd held off taking him to some of the more scenic (to me) parts of our home state where I like to fish, because of the prevalence of rattlers in that area. I think his reaction now would be to watch them from a distance. He's a sharp kiddo so as we draw closer to the time of moving down that direction, I'm going to show him lots of pictures of the "good" snakes and the "bad" snakes so he'll be able to ID them. I still don't want him picking them up or playing with them - admiring them from a distance is fine, relocating with the aid of a stick is fine, and dispatching the "bad" snakes is fine if necessary but I'd prefer to be the one doing the relocating or dispatching.

I saw one of my ducks grab a small snake a couple days ago. A few of the ducks were scared, while a few others were trying to take it away from her. She swallowed it before I could see what kind of snake it was.
