I don't recall even seeing 6.5 Grendal at my Academy mush. But I have not looked. The last time I was there, everything was out but .224 Valkyrie.

If he is a reloader, then 44 mag will serve him very well, even more so if he casts his own. You can shoot a very wide range of weights out of a 44 mag, and you can load it mild to wild. One of my favorite "hot" loads is a 200gr RNFP over a hefty charge of H110. Out of a 20" rifle, I'm getting about 2000 FPS. It kicks a bit and puts out a bit of smoke too. If he is not a reloader, then he might find the cost of 44 mag to be a little too high for medium to high volume shooting. Off the shelf ammo tends to be watered down a bit, and the true magnum level stuff isn't cheap.

6.5 Creedmoor or 6.5 Grendel would be my next suggestion. They are wonderful and accurate rounds that are easy to shoot, and cheap to buy off the shelf.

Yep. I was real glad I had that 224, and bought a few boxes with my 3 box limit.

    That place east of Waco....
Is his primary use going to be hunting or range use? A lever-action rifle in .30-30 is hard to beat. Ruger also makes an American rifle in 7.62x39 that would do for his needs.....if he doesn't want to spring for the CZ version.

The Ruger american ranch in 762x39 is a fine rifle. Taught my son at the range on one, and it drops deer just fine.

I also have a Howa mini action in 6.5 Grendel that is nice.

I buy a box of Hornady 6.5 Grendel or 7.62x39 every time i walk into academy

For something in .308 I'd recommend a AR-10 solely for the plethora of aftermarket accessories and upgrades or if he wants to get spendy a FAL or a CETME/PTR. Aero precision makes great .308 ars but if he's wanting a bolt action you can't go wrong with weatherby or an old remington 700 short action

You don't buy a Ferrari for your first car... Find a caliber of interest, and buy an entry level gun. If you like it then buy something better. You will know a lot more about your needs then.

I heard that there was a surplus of French military rifles available, never fired and dropped just once... (old joke)

Aero and bcm are great rifles that are very affordable, FALs hold their price and if the guy finds out he doesn't like said rifle he can always flip it for a easy profit. Aero and bcm aren't the ferraris of guns they're made to be affordable but extremely high quality

Is there a reason you are necroing a year old thread? I can't help but think the <25 post count may have something to do with it.
