Lol. The ar has been around for over 60 years. There are no "secrets", and no one is some far out guru.

Tell you what, if you don't bother spacing your gas rings, and you get a malfunction because of said gas rings not being spaced, I'll eat crow and admit I'm wrong. Hell I'll even start a new thread about it.

But i wont have to, you know why? The gas rings will move whichever way they please when they cycle. Hell they will move around when you first insert them

No you won't, I've read far too many of your posts for you to ever admit you don't know everything.

On this particular disagreement I have no opinion because I'm that guy that never reads the manual unless something breaks.

You nust be confusing me with somebody else, i say all the time that i don't know everything. However, i do know a few things. One of those things is the ar15, even then, i dont know everything about it. I can sit here all day and explain why the things on it are, but I'm not the person to ask about bolt thrust vectoring, or any number of other extremely in depth topics people talk about.

"On this particular disagreement I have no opinion"

Yet here you are. If you have no opinion, why are you accusing me of not knowing about this subject?

Just look at the bolt and gas rings, and insert it in the carrier and pull it out. This isn't rocket science if you have even a rudimentary understanding of mechanics.

Lol I'm here to jerk your chain and poke fun at your pedantry. I said nothing about you knowing or not knowing about the topic.

What I have no opinion about is the gas rings, I've never spaced the gaps or given it a second thought, it's obvious they compress like piston rings, (they essentially serve the same purpose) and would never stay in a specifc orientation.

Pedantry... Only when people (not you) accuse me of "stupidity", and make a big deal about how a bit of stupid BS thats been floating around gun shops like a turd in a punch bowl is set in stone fact.

Just having a little fun at your expense and the seriousness of the debate over something so minor. No offense intended to the participants.

I should add: I certainly do not know a lot about guns - shooter of many guns but master of none so to speak - always learning though. I started this thread to ask a simple question about something I was ignorant about and that was not mentioned in my manual. I had the hope of being made less ignorant on the subject. Quite a few posters illuminated the subject quite well and did that nicely; so, I won't be screwing with the gas tube, not even to suck vodka through it.

Watch some AR tourture test. Gas tubes will fail when abused.

You didn't watch the torture test posted earlier did ya?

Just messing with you. The barrel popped in that one.
Yes I agree all things being equal they should fail first.

They used a stainless steel barrel. A normal CMV barrel will do a better job of dissipating heat, but is a bit harder to make a "more accurate" barrel out of

Im suprised no one's posted a meltdown video yet.....

Looked like fun and while I like the videos made by Iraqveteran8888, I've got to say he sure was not paying attention to safety when he made this one. If you listen to his spiel in the first two minutes as to what he expects might happen, you would think he'd at least wear shooting rated goggles over his eyeglasses. Even if they were rated as shooting glasses they offered only minimal protection over what he expected might happen and what actually did happen. In a subsequent AK cook-off, he wore a welder's mask; guess he learned when making this one.

I guess that explains it. Whatever hit him in the face must have been his wake-up call. Hate to see him lose his sight and stop shooting/making videos. Great stuff he puts out. His second AK meltdown was fabulous - the gun actually was on fire and kept blasting for quite awhile after that. I'd love to be able to afford doing that with a few guns.
