This thread is severely lacking pics of lever guns.

Do I own a 30-30 sounds singular. Are we not supposed to own more than one?

Heck, I'm trying to convince myself I don't need a Henry sidegate, but have you felt a Henry action?

I'm 38. I've shot several 30-30 lever action rifles. It's a fun gun to shoot, but there are reasons I do not own a 30-30 or any lever action rifle.

Primarily it is because they are expensive to own and shoot. The other reason is if I was to hunt there are far better choices today for hunting deer, hogs, or varmits. In 1950 it was a fine rifle and a fine caliber. 70 years later, in 2020, there are just so many better options for rifles and calibers.

It's like a 45LC six shooter. It's a cool gun but I'd never have a practical reason to own one.
A lever .30-30 is an entirely practical woods rifle. If you don't hunt the woods, or only have clear sendero shots, I can grant your point.

30-30 is cheap to shoot, good for most anything on th planet. Lever gun - good short field gun. Bolt action top loaders are for prone mil. shooting. Mil. doesn't use any more as shooting scene is standing now. 303, 30-30, krag about the same. Yes,less than 308, which is less than 06, so what? Oh, try working the bolt while on horseback.

    Here
My dad had a Marlin 30-30 that he used mainly for deer hunting.

One day when I was about 8 years old my dad and I were down in pasture checking on the cows. When we came by the lake dam where we did most of our target practice my dad set up a can, handed me his Marlin and told me that if I didn't hit the can at least 2 out of 3 shots I would never shoot that gun again. I took him at his word. I can still remember the pressure that I felt as I took careful aim at that can. I was so relieved after hitting the can the first 2 shots and I felt like I was on top of the world when I pulled the trigger on the 3rd shot and hit that can again. I remember that day like it was yesterday although it was close to 60 years ago.

My dad died when I was 10 years old.

That Marlin was stolen when I was 15 years old. I think I know who the thief was but I was unable to prove it and it was never recovered. I would sure like to have it back.

Got my grandfathers marlin (1939) lever, its so old you have to pull the stock off to see the serial #. Shoots great, my oldest son has killed a couple nice bucks with it recently. Also have a Savage over and under, top barrel is a 30-30 bottom is a .20 ga. Great turkey gun!

    No you go away now.
No problem, I will leave. But I still own a .30-30 and I will continue to say it is a boring caliber to shoot, easy to reload, and honestly no longer the best...

It's funny how "offended" fudds get, you cannot deny that there are much better rifles for hunting in 2020.

I've never heard a bad word nor complaint about the 30-30 from any deer or hog I've ever shot with it. They just kind of lay there all nice and quiet with their tongue hanging out.

There will always be opinions on the "best".

In the Piney Woods, the 30-30 works just fine for deer. Heavy slug not as easily deflected if it hits a twig. Most shots are less than 100 yards, usually less.

Maybe there is something that is "best", but a 30-30 will perform quite ably.

Open country, longer shots? Yep, others will outshine the 30-30.

It is all about using the most appropriate tool for the job.

A 300 win mag or 7mm mag in the woods is like using a sledgehammer to tap in a finishing nail.
