..He’s bummed because it was a 1923 craftsman, all original including doors, floors and fixtures. Things like original crystal doorknobs aren’t easy to replace.
Q: was it on the national register? If so, how would that designation impact the owner and the demo company when it comes to making the owner whole again?

Guy who used to work for me inherited a house in Dallas. He was in the process of renovating it, which is a challenge as he lives in CA/LA.

At any rate, he sent this to me earlier today...

I'm a Land Surveyor and I saw this happen back in the 80s in Nacogdoches Tx. Another surveyor was exactly one lot off from where he thought he was and had a demolition crew knock down a house that was being renovated. A neighbor called the owner and when he arrived the house was gone. He walked around the lot a few times and walked directly up to the surveyor, pointed his index finger at him and said "You'll be hearing from me."

He got the local news involved...not sure to what end.

He said he’s gonna be in the Channel 8 news at 5p this afternoon.

If you google “ Texas man has housed demolished by mistake” it would seem that this is not a particularly unusual occurrence in Texas

I remember when Ben Reyes was a council member here in Houston back in the day. He got the bright idea to go into a lower income part of the city and bulldoze some houses that were deemed drug havens for crack users. Turned out the folks who had passed away and used to live in these homes had left the property and homesteads to survivors who in turn sued the Phuck out of that dumb bastard. The city somehow separated itself from his stupidity and left him to fight the lawsuits on his own.

Seems he also decided he wanted a magnolia tree from one of the properties. Gene Green who beat Ben in a run off was all for an assualt weapons ban tried to buy a carbine from a buddy of mine @ a gun show.

After giving this a little more thought, I am pretty sure I would need the services of a really good criminal defense attorney if this happened to me and a check to make me whole was not immediately offered to me.
Yep, pretty sure I would go positively medieval on someone.

In other words, lots of sentimental, as well as monetary, value.

In addition to that, make sure he gets compensation for the taxes he will owe on the vacant land, plus the landscape upkeep while he tries to either sell the lot or build a new house. The lot may not be easy to sell, and a new home in an area of old, nicer houses may not sell well either.
