30 years ago my wife and I worked at a street mission. There was this semi-retarded (I know that's not the exact right term, but don't know how else to say it) man that came in.

He had our phone number some how, and one late night we got a call from a hospital saying he had been hit by a car.

He was lucky to be alive. Busted him up pretty bad. He was walking down a road and someone hit him from behind and left him laying there on the road, didn't stop.

Someone called an ambulance and they took him in.

There’s nothing wrong with using the word “retarded” to describe someone who is mentally retarded.

Our PC culture has tried to demonize the term, but it is actually the correct term to use.

My brother in law is mentally retarded. He lives with us and my wife is his legal guardian. She gets aggravated when people torture the English language to avoid saying “retarded.” On the other hand, she is a little touchy about calling someone a “retard”, which is a pejorative term.
