The Gunfigher Match (GFM) is a local match at The Range at Austin (TRA). The match is operated by the training department of TRA and is not affiliated with nor sanctioned by a national body such as USPSA.

GFM is intended to be beginner friendly, so the equipment requirements are low. All you need is a centerfire pistol with a capacity of 10 rounds or more (although 2019 saw stages of 12 rounds per magazine) and 3 magazines.

Because there's no holster requirement, draw is off a table. But, once drawn, there may be movement, depending on the stage. Sometimes it's hijinks like bursting through a curtain, although that is uncommon. Most of the time is shooting around barricades and other simple actions.

The 2020 season opens on Sunday, January 26.

Visit the TRA website therangeaustin.com and search "Gunfighter Match" among the classes. Sign up as if to any other class.

GOOD ON Y'ALL! That sounds like a great, non-intimidating segue into ISPA/USPSA... (arguably THE best firearms related "training" or thing I've ever done... thanks Gregg Garrett!).

I wish we lived closer, I'd take the GF, who's main concern with "competition" is that she's "not at that level" (which is something I've heard from numerous shooters, beginners and experienced alike).

I think the Gunfighter Match and Steel Challenge are the most beginner-friendly competitions. The equipment requirements are very low, you don't even need a holster in GFM. The course design is simple and she's not going to DQ herself unless she flags someone.

The low risk is what brought me in. It's not like I'm going into the Texas 3-Gun championship. That said, in my first match I was second to last. That is to be expected. It was quite fun nonetheless.

Getting up early is a concern. Tomorrow I'll get out of bed at around 7, get out of the house at 7:30 for the 8:30 safety briefing. We'll start rolling at 9:00. January attendance is always light, there's still 11 slots remaining. I expect everyone be off by 11:40 or so. I have a movie date with wife at 12:50 p.m.

We have the first match of 2020 on board. There were small procedure and rule changes from 2019:

    - We do not start with the gun unloaded anymore. The gun is loaded and tabled hot, then picked up upon the start signal. Apparently, the original procedure was motivated by a concern about people causing a discharge by grabbing with the finger in the trigger guard. But apparently everyone is responsible and this hurdle was unnecessary.

    - Supermatch entrants are no longer the winners of the regular matches. Instead, shooters are assigned scores, scores are accumulated across the season, and 10 top scorers plus 2 extras are selected for the Supermatch. So, before, Jerry Miculek could come in once, win the match, and be in the Supermatch. In 2020, it's next to impossible for him to do it without showing up several times in order to collect those points.

Jeff launched trial balloons about banning "racing" guns, but the problem is not acute enough, so that didn't happen. I saw folks with just VP9 and Glocks doing quite well.
