Not a fan of the stock, handguard or carry handle.

    Definitely personal preference.

Reminds me of a great gun show deal I happened across a couple years ago.
I guy was standing with a pristine Colt SP1 rifle.
He did not like the stock, hand guard or carry handle and was looking at an M4 style Ruger 5.56 for about $650.
He was hoping to trade straight up but had not gotten the eye of the sales guy.
I observed that after tax the Ruger would be ~$700 so I offered him 800.
We both finished the deal feeling great!

    :)

I ordered an M7 bayonet. I found some ok used surplus with the original M8A1 scabbards, but with old used surplus it can be a crap shoot what you get, and done of them looked a little rusty. So I ended up going with a new unopened surplus M7 with the newer M 10 scabbard. Not Vietnam era, but, either is the Ruger rifle it’s gonna be attached to, so it is what it is! Not sure if I’m gonna put on an A1 flash hider or stay with the A2 birdcage.

Your bayonet will not fit correctly, though it will fit.

You'd either need a midlength gas system for a 16" barrel, or a 14.5" barrel for a carbine gas system

Get an a1 birdcage. 3 prongs are neat, but can be a bit of a pain

If I went to a 14.5” barrel, would that not make it a SBR? Not sure of all the NFA rules. Do they count the muzzle break/flash hider?

You'd have to get a pinned and welded flash hider that can bring the barrel to 16". Something like an extended a2 flash hider. It's easiest to get a proper barrel and send it off to a smith

It would, unless you pinned and welded the flash hider

Growing up looking at photos of my dad from Vietnam, and playing with the old school GI Joe, I couldn’t wait to grow up and join the army so I could carry an M16. Well when I turned 17 and went and talked to the recruiter, my dad had a fit! He was pretty insistent on me going to college. So I watched my friend join up and get shipped off to Germany, and I stayed in Texas and drank for a couple years in San Marcos while going to a class or two every once in a while, and ended up not finishing college! But I’m damn near 50 now and I finally got some thing close to an M16! Gonna have to replace the buffer spring though. The one that came with that stock, sounds like a 300 lb man sitting down on an old couch every time I fire it!

If you want to get rid of the "springy" sound, put a SMALL amount of red grease on the buffer spring. No more "boiiiinnnnngggg" every time you shoot.

Quick question. If I switched out my 16” barrel for this 14.5” one, as long as I have a muzzle break or flash hider that brings the total length to 16” pinned or welded on, I would be compliant? Im trying to get a true M4 look and feel without having to get a stamp for an SBR.

Yes. Make sure whatever muzxle device you pick is long enough, an a1/a2 birdcage, for example is too short
