This is probably my weirdest, if not my ugliest, looking gun. I painted this Mosin Nagant several years ago in anticipation of a zombie apocalypse bayonet charge at a blogger shoot I attended (bear in mind, you could get these for about $75-$80 back then).

The paint on the wood looked just like I had anticipated but the paint on the metal was supposed to be a crimson red - I imagine the guy at the paint factory who made up the color charts was a bit colorblind. Since I only had gotten the paint a few days before the event, I had to use what I had on hand and hot pink it was or nothing. Then in January 2017, I started to strip the paint with what wound up being a rather ineffective spray on stripper. So, I shelved the project.

Somewhere in the two years since, I bought a can of liquid paint stripper to be applied by a brush. I also put that on the shelf and forgot all about it until last night. I don't know what got into me last night but I felt an urge to start the job and that's what I did. Most of the metal is 99% paint free now, only the front barrel band, which I cannot figure how to get off of the barrel without removing the front sight (and I have no clue how to do that) is still covered with pink. I'll strip that, while on the barrel, later today. Then for the wood which I am guessing will take quite a bit longer than did the metal, at least to do it right. Once all the paint and original top coat are off of the wood, I'll refinish it and while it may never look pretty at least it will look better than it did when painted.

Will look less weird once I get my Form 1/SBR approved so I can put my 10” barrel on it.

There was a time you could get whole crates of nagants or mausers for not much more.

God I miss those days. I thin the crate of nagants was 250 bucks with all the extra crap. I'm young enough to have never sniffed the surplus bonanza from any earlier than that.

Will we ever see surplus again? Maybe when Africans or muslims are done killing each other? Probably not, though.

Excuse me while I kick myself. I ended up after 25 years with 2 empty nagant crates I put on the street only to see people fighting over the empty crates.

Kick my self, I need a hammer to smash my hand. How stupid.

Someone made a coffee table out of a surplus rifle crate some years ago and posted photos online. It was truly impressive, as I recall the top was changed to glass and the rifles were inside and lit up. I think it was a crate full of Mosin Nagants but don't remember for sure. That would be a very expensive coffee table today.

Given how weak the original finishes are any upgrade in that regard is a big improvement.

The shorter barrels do look funnier though.
The NP3 makes the DA trigger feel like it is rolling on Teflon ball bearings. It is that smooth. A shame Robar closed shop. Makes cleaning it as simple as wiping blast residue off with a rag.
