Thank God this only comes up every once in awhile - otherwise, I’m pretty sure there’d be an armed insurrection against the Texas government!

Got notice from the DPS, this time around, I had to appear “in person” in order to renew my Texas drivers license (non commercial).

Went down to Plano today in hopes of having better luck than the McKinney location (my home town). No such luck; line was out the door, wrapped around the corner and down the side of the building. Un-fricken-believable!

I know Carrollton - drivers license “mega center” -has the ‘call ahead’ or get “inline, online” thing but that’s a pretty good drive over there for me. Thinking it might be worth driving up to Paris in hopes of not spending a half-day (or more) waiting in line. Anybody got the lowdown on Paris’ drivers license wait in line?

Wichita Falls was so fast that they called me up before I could finish the paperwork. And got a "thank you for your service" comment.

Yeah, I got all “my stuff”....I was warned about that already. Plus the DPS website has a ‘checklist’ that itemizes all the acceptable documents you need to bring with you.

However the wait times in our area appear to just be “out of control”. First-hand family and friends have told me, they waited five, seven and eight hours. And from the lines I’ve seen at McKinney (& now, Plano), those times are absolutely believable.

Went yesterday to the McKinney location - it was cold AND wet (raining) and I thought, “ah ha... nobody will be there!” First clue was, the parking lot was full and closest parking was about a hundred yards away. Bunch of folks standing in line, shivering with their umbrellas fully deployed!

Don't even get me started on how much of a pain on the rear it was to get a Texas license with an out of state VAliD license. Even had the checklist printed and ready to go.
They made my wife, who's father has been deceased for 15 years get a copy of his death certificate from out of state to prove that her name changed when we got married.......

Pain ON the rear? You're doing it wrong.

Seems a marriage cert/license should suffice, did you have one?

I am in Plano and can definitely say to avoid that office. I heard the Garland office OK. I did not know about the Carrollton office being that large and advanced. May have to look into that one next time.

Paris has always had a short line and I lived nearby until 1 1/2 years ago but it's probably a 2 hour drive from DFW. Bonham was always short until everyone from McKinney/Plano started driving up there and it was a half day process a couple of years back (small office). Daughter went to Carrollton last week on a Thursday before it opened. Got there at 6:37am per the text and 40-50 people ahead of her. 8:13am she was leaving after getting her renewal done. Not bad compared to some horror stories and do not go on a Monday or Friday since many take a 3 day weekend and hit the DMV.

As a result of the last time we talked of this on TGT, she made an appointment via the DPS site & my SWMBO went right in & quickly & easily got her renewal. One has to appear in person every other renewal = (iirc) once every 12 years. This time around requires a lot more proof of identity than in the past. Have your birth certificate & proof of SSN (she used an income tax form). Good luck. BTW, it's at DPS in TX & (evidently) DMV in OK. :usflag:

I feel your pain. However in our small berg if there are 2 people in lien the complaints start. We have to go to the basement of the county courthouse. took my wife and I about 30 minutes total to get our TXDL. Of course it is a bit of a drive to get here from there.

Might try heading up to a more thinly populated area, maybe Grayson County or one of the bordering ones. I've done that before and left Tarrant and drove down a half hour or so to Waxahachie in Ellis County and it was a breeze. Did it for two of my kid's driving tests as well.

Helps to get there pretty early too. The later in the day it gets, the longer the wait is.

I had to go for the "in person" renewal last month. I made the mistake of going to one of their mega-centers. A few thousand other folks went the same day. 80% were foreign. There were big TV screens showing advertising all over the place. Only place I've ever seen an ad for winter vacation in Russia. (Only place where a winter in Russia would actually look better than where you're stuck.)

They questioned my birth certificate. (It was an original instead of the usual stamped copy.) I was tempted to tell them, "This is what one looks like when it's printed in America."

Then the thumb scanners wouldn't work right. I have an old scar (table saw) that the system didn't like and we had to re-do that over and over until she could get the system to accept that these are indeed my thumbprints.

Instead of filling prisons with non-violent offenders, we should just sentence them to renewing their driver's license every day for a few weeks. Unfortunately, it might violate the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment.
