This is a dumb question but I need some input.

I am pitching to my wife the idea of me building a reloading bench in my office so I can reload inside instead of the garage where I am currently planning on setting up.

I do all of my gun cleaning in the garage since she's not as fond of the smell of gun cleaner as I am. ;)

She's concerned if reloading has the same smell. The only thing I can think of that might stink is case lube and I figure I can do that in the garage. I'll also do my tumbling and case sorting in the garage too.

Does anything else have a distinctive odor that I should be aware of?

I know it's a dumb question but it will help.

    Thanks!

No smells except the empty beer cans and pizza boxes. The only time I really notice any smells is when I run cases through my case annealer. Tell her she's lucky you are doing it in an office. Until I set up my reloading room, I did it in the livingroom.

No worries, especially if you reload some 9MM or 380 for her to shoot. The only part of my reloading that remotely smells is the case lube I use. Dillon's pump spray case lube uses alcohol as a carrier so it smells faintly of rubbing alcohol until it evaporates. Iffin you do that in the garage, no problem.

I do not have a very sensitive nose but reloading and case prep has no odors.

My guess if your wife is smelling the Hoppes #9 that we all use for gun cleaning. I love the smell, wife wrinkles nose and makes funny noises when anywhere near the gun cleaning operation. If that is the case I suggest you switch to frog lube which works great and has a minty smell.

As a test you might setup temporarily in your new “reloading room” go through some of the steps and see if she smells anything. Do your cleaning in the garage let the guns air out for 15-20 minutes before bringing them in.

    Gunz are icky.
Assembling new clean components has little to no odor.

    Cleaning solvents have odor.

I highly recommend you do all case depriming/cleaning/tumbling outside of the house.
    Lead residue/dust is present.

Any lead casting should never be done indoors.

I wish but she has no interest in shooting. I have at least converted her from being some what anti-gun to quite pro-gun.

While I do use Hoppes, the Ballistol is what she really objects to. I do have some Froglube but have never bothered to use it.

Good point and my plan would be that any case prep would be done in the garage due to the mess.

Although if I shouldn't even deprime on the press inside (which makes sense), then I ought to just stick to the plan of reloading in the garage.

Thank you all for the feedback!

Stick to doing everything in the garage, no interruptions or immediate 'honey doos'.

    Out here by the lake!
When I was dating my wife my reloading equipment was set up in my living room. She seen who I was the very first time she came into my apartment.

Shortly afterwards I noticed a pistol in her purse. When I asked if I saw what I thought I did & she asked if it was a problem? I took her straight to the gun safe in my bedroom & opened it & said not likely.

I've never used case lube that had enough of a smell to notice. Bullet lube, yes, but unless you are trying to cast your own bullets inside (don't), then that's not an issue.

Smokeless powder has a distinct smell, but it's faint and usually smells VERY clean.
