I'm curious, after another thread drifted to photo geotags and other metadata.

What can you learn from my avatar pic?

It was taken with a cell phone, downloaded to a laptop, and copied here. I've done nothing to protect it. I predict - based solely on my complete lack of IT skills, yet stunningly accurate mental model of the natural world - that you glean no useful info.

I'm mostly interested if the location can be determined. (Hint: that ain't Texas).

If someone can geo-locate it, I'll volunteer more about my story there.

Feel free to post here anything you find.

Must be an inherent feature of the forum software.
I didn't try all that hard to dig into it, but on a cursory look using my phone and a copy of Photo EXIF editor it doesn't have any metadata that is useful.

I do think the forum strips a lot of the metadata out of a photo when it's added. I experimented once with uploading a photo that had a bunch of EXIF data and it was all gone when I downloaded it.

Probably not the worst feature to have intentionally or not. It's nice to have the metadata for my personal use from my own photos, but can't say id love to distribute that much info across the world

So, you think data is stripped because it's a low-res avatar or do forums also strip data from thread-posted pics?

The geotag location is not showing, but there's other information such as phone type, flash exposure time, focus etc

Huh. All accurate. I guess the question would be whether the geo information was in the original.

So much for the forum software stripping it. Tapatalk and vbulletin both had a chance.

Someone else throw one out to experiment with.

Ive been told that mot metadata is lost if a photo is resized to upload. No idea if it’s true.

Location services were ON when photo was taken. Uploaded through TaT but downsized to 1024X something or the other. Middle size.

Well there ya go. Just resize it when uploading through TaT.

Here is the original at full size.

That's actually a smaller file than the previous. The first post of that image was over 900kb, this one is a bit over 450.

That aside, I downloaded it and it is also completely stripped of metadata

That’s odd. I wonder why my TaT uploads are stripped but the one posted earlier had data.

The other was an IPhone 5, I have an IPhone 7.

He didn’t say he uploaded from an iPhone though, just an assumption.

So here's an original 4k image that has metadata for geolocation. If someone else wants to check it to see if it still contains that info after downloading it from TGT that'd be swell. I'll also try downloading it and checking it.
