Some cops just don't like citizens being armed.....they would rather let the armed robbery happen and pick up the pieces in their after-the-fact investigation.

Have to remember that leo's role is to respond after a crime is reported, gather the facts and arrest guilty parties. Arriving at a crime is progress is far less frequent, so stopping the crime is essentially the responsibility of the victim and bystanders. Allowing someone to be robbed and shot before a armed bystander takes action is pure foolishness but it is what many police and DAs would prefer.

It's SA. They'd prefer citizens not even be allowed to carry pocket knives, so I'm not surprised.

Then again, I imagine, we don't recommend this is a standard response for any PD. They don't want to encourage anyone to try something stupid just to be a hero, they also don't want some lawyer somewhere suing the city because something they said could be used in a lawsuit from a shooting.

(it's the PD's fault my son was shot by another customer while robbing 7-11 type thing)

They will be able to prove who did the shooting without difficulty.

The why may be more difficult.
If you don't talk and the only other witness is assuming room temperature, I could see how the lawyer might have a point. But he isn't my lawyer, and I'm in the habit of keeping my mouth shut and letting my lawyer say stuff for me when legal stuff comes up.

I've heard that the thing to say is "there was self-defense shooting". You may go to jail, but you didn't give them a major piece of evidence to incriminate you. If they can't even prove who did the shooting, they can't get you convicted. Or that's what I heard a lawyer say.

    Don’t talk to the cops.

That seemingly unassuming statement could be twisted and used against you.

E.g. “Isn’t it true that your life was never in danger? The suspect never looked your way or even acknowledged you in this video footage. How can you claim self-defense?”

This can’t be posted often enough...in all of history, not one attorney has ever said “thank God my client talked to the police.”

Police said they don't recommend people take matters into their own hands, like the bounty hunters did. She did add, this is Texas and their actions could be seen as very commendable.

Sounds like something Ulysha Hall would say...

good friend of ours son was at a gas station last year in west SA and leroy came up and put a gun to his head and demanded money. guy gave him his wallet. leroy said i"ll kill you if you don't cough up more. guy kept telling him he paid at the pump with a card and doesn't carry cash and emptied out his pockets to prove. he got hit in the head with the pistol and leroy got in a car with another one driving and they left. guy ran into the store screaming and told clerk to call PD as he was shaking too bad to do it. clerk said yea it happens a lot here. took SAPD 25 minutes to get there. said basically no harm no foul and left. said they were unsympathetic as he didn't get a lisc # and better description. he said he was so scared he couldn't of described his own mother.

And remember folks, this is what SAPD finds preferable in these situations.

Scenario 1: Dead Bad Guy, no money lost, massive amounts of paperwork, and bad publicity for SAPD and the city of San Antonio.

Scenario 2: John Q Public has lost his wallet and money, suffered physical harm, and mental anguish. SAPD does minimal paperwork after leisurely strolling their way out there, and said no harm no foul.

I am not abdicating for everyone to go out and play vigilante, I am just blowing of steam and highlighting some of the issues in our society today.

If we're talking about what to say to the police if you're involved in a shooting, the police don't even talk to the police after an officer involved shooting until a couple of days later and only with a lawyer present.

That should tell you all you need to know.

    Yup.

Cops, lawyers, politicians...they all tell their kids “don’t talk to the police”.

And yet here we are...In 25% of cases where DNA exonerated someone in prison, they were in prison because of something they said to the police.

    Think about that.
Innocent people were locked up because of what they said, and it took decades and DNA evidence to prove their innocence.
