    was going to the range and offing yourself a selfish act with a message

    Though it's possible, I'm guessing going to the range and doing it there was not intended to send a message. Could be that was the easiest way they envisioned doing it, maybe they wanted to do it at home or maybe they went to go shooting, already had suicidal thoughts and a switch flipped.

    I do think it was a very selfish thing to do.

    I'd guess the same. I wouldn't even call it selfish. I'd just call it short-sighted. When a person is not thinking straight, it's a stretch to assume his choice of venue is deliberate. They're thinking about what they're going to do and oblivious to everything else, IMO.

    There have, of course, been plenty of deliberate, selfish, FU suicides. Many years ago, I remember that guy (I think he was a city manager in Florida who was about to be indicted for various sorts of malfeasance.) who called a press conference and then, on camera, shoved a revolver muzzle in his mouth and blew off the top of his head.

    That's a selfish FU to the world. Short of circumstances that obvious, though, speculation about the full range of motives after a suicide is almost always a futile guessing game.

    Right, you've just joined the forum and within less than a week, and you're now our resident expert on suicides!

    I never said suicides never FUs, but you implied the majority are and that is simply not the case.

    But don't bother responding, as we have this wonderful ability to ignore people on here and most of the time I use it to avoid reading idiotic posts.

    So I should wait how long before posting in serious non gun related threads? Did I say I was an expert? My opinion just differs from yours and our experiences with suicide seems different.

    Go ahead ignore me, it will probably make it better for everyone. I implied THIS one seemed like a FU.
    Are the majority? I dunno, I would say yes. Heck psychologists can't even agree. I thought a forum was where we express ideas to communicate in a logical and rational fashion? I guess not huh? Your screen name fits you.

    Thinking that maybe the individual that took their life was one of the 21 daily veteran suicides, I tried to find out more information, but it looks like the San Antonio media lost interest.
    What I did find out was disturbing. Our state and Florida hold the dubious record for most veteran suicides, and something else. I assumed that young vets were more likely to kill themselves but it turns out us old vets, 55 to 74 are most likely.

    The San Antonio media purposely doesn't post a lot of information about suicides or covers them while they are happening as to not encourage others to do the same especially in cases where the individual desires a high-profile departure.

    About all you will hear about is when it affects the general public (i.e. road closures when there is a potential jumper on an overpass) or after-the fact with minimal details when it occurs in a public place.

    I have heard that is by the request of the SAPD, and while I've never been able to confirm that, I do believe it's true.

    Not trying to justify anything. I have knowno two co-workers that offed themselves and 2 on my wife's side. Madmax didn't answer my question so I will ask you, was going to the range and offing yourself a selfish act with a message? I would rather someone do what your friend/relative did than what this guy did.

    Really????
    One guy got mad at his family one night, went in to the bedroom and walked out with a pistol. Told them they would be sorry for not listening to him and blew his head off in front of them.
    The other, his wife was going to leave him. He used a shotgun in front of her and the kids.

    The guy at the range, the same " look at poor me" bullshit. I have more sympathy for the folks that were forced to watch their self pity. Regardless of the reason for it. I have more sympathy for someone that goes off alone and does it and those they leave behind.

    I have told my kids and family, if I get so old and sick that I can't take care of myself or death is imminent, point me at the woods across the street, give me a nudge if I can't start by myself and don't look for me for a couple weeks. Nature will take it's course in due time and it is where I would prefer to be.
    For the life of me, I can't understand how someone can feel that sorry for themselves. Look in the woods. ALL life is a struggle. Why should we be any different. It makes living all that much better.
    Embrace the pain, it lets you know you are still alive.

    I have spent all my life around military. WWii, Korean and Vietnam vets. My Pop did his tour in Vietnam and served 23 years. Retired 1sgt.
    He once told me this;
    No sane professional soldier wants war. It is ugly, vicious, nasty and things are done and seen that nobody should have to do or see. There is nothing noble about it. Regardless of the reason for it.
    The hardest part about it for most is a double edged sword;
    Knowing you survived when others didn't that might be more deserving or not.
    And reconciling in your head that you have, or have taken part in, the taking of other's lives.
    The longer you live with that, the harder it gets to live with.
    And some can't.
    I have known or known of many vets that could not. I was one of the lucky ones. My Pop could. And went on to try to help as many others as he could both in the service and after He retired.
    For some, it is the perfect life.
    Others, should be nowhere near the military let alone in it.
    For older vets, and on a different scale younger vets, I can muster some degree of sympathy for the choice to not live with that life anymore.
    Much more than someone that has not lived that life.

    Maybe the guy did not own a gun so went to the range and rented one?

    I’ve had 5 suicides by friends. 2 were major FUs, 1 was severe depression and 2 were health and pain related due to a terminal illness.
