I'm eager to look at some USAA, not just insurance. I'm a long time member, but dumped them back in 1983 due to them screwing up my IRA and refusing to fix it.

But they have closed all their satellite offices and their website is of no use. Is it all a telephone deal these days ?
I've never dealt face-to-face with a USAA agent in the four decades I've been a member. That involves time assigned in foreign countries, and in half-a-dozen different states.

GEICO has always been good to me. Although, that teen driver is going to hit you hard no matter where you go, it's just a high risk. Perhaps you could only tie them to one vehicle, being the oldest and cheapest to insure.

We're at $2500/year on two vehicles - commercial policy on Ram 3500 4x4 CC w/utility bed and $40k declared value, lincoln MKT for the wife. Both have 500k limits w/$250 deductible, towing/roadside assistance. The '58 Delray I just got...60k declared value, $0 deductible on collosion, 500k un/underinsured. $0 deductible on any glass. 10k miles/yr limit. Crazy part? LESS than $400/year.

I believe USAA is the best you can buy if eligible. Insurance is not just what the premium is but how they pay when a claim is made. USAA always comes through. Have been with them 45 years so I know. If you want to find out how to never have a claim payed buy Allstate. How many insurance companies also set up a account to return money to you? I get 2 checks a year from them, all depending on profit and loss but fairly substantial. I believe you get the best rates when you do home, auto, etc. together. Those who have an agent, where do you think his income comes from?
Last time I had a hailstorm USAA paid $26k on 2 houses without any hesitation.

USAA here for 20+ years. They denied a rental car after the missus had a fender bender - claimed I'd canceled the coverage....I told them I had NOT, and pointed out all the other additional coverage we carried, and that it'd make NO sense not to have had it. They refused to budge, so I canned them mid-policy and switched to Germania. LOWER premiums, annual policy rather than 6 month - and my guns are covered as "household goods" to the limits of my policy. Friend was involved in that Bastrop fire a few years back - Germania was onsite 36 hours later with a check to cover their temporary housing, and they had a loss check to him within days - enough to cover rebuilding the house. You ARE right in wanting a GOOD company - too damned many of 'em out there gladly take your premiums without wanting to pay a loss - and Allstate and State Farm come to immediate mind.

I've been hit by a vehicle that had Geico insurance. Was way less than impressed with their adjusters handled the claim (their insureds fault).

3 months of them refusing to cover a rental while they "investigated" the accident because they were having trouble getting in touch with their insured for a recorded statement, then after all that time, I find out they had state minimum coverage and I had to file on my under-insured coverage on my policy anyway.

But it all worked out int he end. Ford dealer said they could fix my truck (frame slightly bent in front of the front wheels), insurance totaled the truck due to unibody frame design. My insurance told me it was totaled. I said I wanted to buy it for savage. They wanted an obscene amount for salvage value if I bought it back. I told my insurance company that was an obscene amount for salvage and asked if they thought that was the salvage value, what did they think the totaled value was. When they told me how much they were going to pay me for the totaled truck, I told them I would be over with the keys directly. And they let me take off whatever aftermarket stuff I could unbolt like the toolbox, headache rack, bed rails, rear bumper, etc. Turns out I had the truck for 2 years and just a hair under 100k miles for $1,500. (back in 2002).

But Geico only had 15k coverage on their policy at the time, agreed the truck should be totaled, but instead of telling me up front they didn't have enough coverage to cover the damage, they screwed me around for 3 months before I finally turned it in to my insurance.
