So, is this round dead or not? It seems to have a small cult following, but parts and uppers are getting scarce for it. The days of cheap 6.8 uppers is apparently over too. Regardless of whether I build or buy one, the upper alone would be over $600.

I know the 6.5 Grendel outshines it for long range shooting, but I felt that it was a good alternative to 5.56 for hunting and defense.

It is just one of those rounds that doesn't do anything special.

I have always liked it but never owned it.

A flooded field will drown out the weak and this seems to be the case with it.

The military not adopting it spelled the beginning of the end for it.

I personally wouldn't get too invested in it now as ammo and componants are just going to get more scarce and expensive.

I actually disagree, will it be as popular as 223/556 for just plinking at the range no but it is a good option for a round for hunting. If 224 v is still around some components will be available mags and bolts.

Not really. When i see a 6.8 spc case (which very rarely happens) i pick it up and admire it.

Even though hunting season has started, i haven't seen ONE 6.8. .224V? Yup, 6.5G? Yup, 7.62x39? Yup .300blk? Yup, .350 legend? Yup.

I think the "not 5.56" market is just too crowded to have more than 1-2 contenders, especially when 99% of all AR's are in 5.56.

I LOVE the 6.8SPC. Three of mine are on the piston LWRC Six8 platform. In addition, I managed to pick up two of the bare upper/lower sets, and built my own as DI rifles--one in 6.8SPC and the other, I recently built up my .224 Valkyrie.

There's not a deer or hog in Texas you can't take ethically and efficiently with the 6.8 round.

    No, it is not.

The fact that flamethrowers exist is proof that someone thought “I want to set those people on fire, but I’m just not close enough to get the job done”.

The ar platform is a good hunting option and can be cheaply changed to fit a large majority of people. I hunted with a 270 most of my youth but in the Texas hill country my shots are less than 100 yards typically. 223 can take most game in north america but shot placement is critical, I prefer to have just a bit more when hunting that is why I use the 6.8 especially if some hogs wonder in to the feeder

jsesurplus.com has had Yankee Hill Machine 20" 6.8mm 1x10 barrels in the white, no gas port- gunsmith special project on sale for $40 ea. I have a couple of friends, one in Austin and one in Burleson/Rendon that can preform the surgery on them. It would be a pretty reasonable way to get into a 6.8 if you want to.

I found a place that does offer 6.8 uppers for a very nice price. ar15part.com. I can't find a lot about them other than that their barrels are custom made for them (the barrels are apparently pretty good), and that their handguards are nice too. I found a couple of reviews for their uppers that was pretty positive. Their shipping time and response time for inquiries is supposed to be top notch. I have yet to find anything negative. Considering that they place has been around a few years now, I'll take that as a good sign. I THINK it is a mom/pop shop based out of Texas.

You can buy a 16" barreled upper minus the BCG and charging handle for $270, or you can buy one with both along with a few other options (different choices for pretty much every major part) for around $425. I might have to bite on that.

When you think about it, are there any rounds that do anything 'special'?

6.8 is just a nice, intermediate cartridge that is excellent for things like self defense and hunting typical texas game without a lot of recoil. Texas hog hunters really seem to like it.

As for scarcity of ammo, I like to check Ammoseek.com. They show hundreds and hundreds of 6.8 ammo listings. "Scarcity" is not a word I would associate with 6.8 ammo.

LOL, obviously, the only AR15 that will survive will be .223/5.56 (actually different calibers, but who is counting). Every other AR will be gone gone gone. Why people even bother with other calibers that will disappear is just beyond me. :m16:

Oh wait, 5.56/.223 will be gone as well given that the military is supposedly moving to their new 6.8 wacko round.

    Why would I not?
    Free info!

I won't even give them the page view. Midsouth Shooters Supply, Midway USA, Grafs, Lucky Gunner, and Ammo Seek all sell ammo, and they don't price gouge like the scumbags who run CTD.

To put it as nicely as possible, CTD can eat shit and die.
