He is AWOL. Per AR 600-20, Army Command Policy, West Point cadets are active duty and, in fact, rank after commissioned and warrant officers, but before NCOs.
I hope this ends well, but I fear it won't.

They said there is nothing to point to him be a danger to others but he is maybe a dager to himself. Do they think him suicidal? if so then he is also a great potential danger to others because suicidal thoughts may turn to homicidal thoughts as he may try suicide by cop by shooting at innocents. Of course, it is a GREAT COMFORT that they do not think he has any magazines or ammo - since they are so difficult to come by for an M4. Damn, they must think people are idiots to spout out crap like that about this guy and his missing rifle. Then again, no photo, no name, no description. Please get real.
I think they'd make a good effort to find him if a weapon was not missing along with him; however, it is only logical to step up any such search since his weapon is also missing. That he and his weapon are missing kind of brings it to a higher level of urgency that he be found - don't ya think!

They didn't say cause of death. So are we assuming he somehow found some ammo and used the M4 on himself? Probably no place to buy ammo on the campus. But it's not unheard of to save a couple of rounds from the previous range practice/qual.
