Of course Darkpriest is correct that McCulloch County is in the center but I would argue moving the meet that far west would cause attendance to drop. At least until there was something very much akin to a standard range layout, perhaps even with plumbing & power. Just a gut sense.

    Right.

The ideal location for the meet would not be the geographic center of the state. It would be the population center of the state. The U.S. Census, in 2010, determined that to be 30° 54′ 19″ N 97° 21′ 56″ W, or just northeast of Holland, Texas, in Bell County. If anyone can find a more recent determination of the population center, I'd be interested but this is it as of the last census:

We can't afford property in Bell county.
Really? A decent shooting range minimally needs:
    • more than 10 acres in an unincorporated location
      • to have enough room for a square range or tac bays and decent rifle distances and
      • to take advantage of state law,
    • few neighbors, and,
    • a shape that's generally long and skinny on the north-south axis so that the direction of fire is roughly straight north or south. (It's not fun to have a shooting range that faces straight east. Shooting into the rising sun is a pain. I'm a member of such a club and I basically don't go to it before noon.)
So is there anything like that at a reasonable price in Bell county?

This one seems to tick all the boxes for a bit over $173K. I don't have that kind of scratch laying around. I do, however, contend that the existence of such a property means that anyone contemplating installing a centrally-located range needs to lock down a definition of "can't afford."

I like the idea of the forum buying its own land and setting up a range. I'm not sure how viable that idea is though. If y'all get serious about it, I'll chip in a few bucks.

I also like the idea of having a few different reunions in different parts of the state throughout the year.

One thing I'd suggest is to have a multi day reunion. It would be nice to be able to get there Friday night, have the reunion all day Saturday and Sunday, and get home that Sunday night.

I'd want that land just to have it.
Well, I bought a Powerball ticket. (Hey, it's not a tax on people bad at math; it's the best entertainment you can buy for $2. :) ) If I win the drawing this evening, I promise to buy that land and build a hell of a range that I will offer up to TGT for designation as the TGT home range. Sound good?
