LOL! That was a pretty good night when I cracked the seal on that bottle.

I do try and support TX products and the folks who produce them. They make plenty of good spirits, wine, and beer in this state...no need to go outside the republic to scratch that itch!

    toddnjoyce,

Do you have this type insurance?

Maybe others have read stories about some who had to shoot a criminal to defend themselves and then were rightfully defended by a great lawyer/lawyers (and won their case) because they had great self defense insurance, but I've not read of a single story along this line.

    You?

I'm still wondering if there are stories out there I've overlooked regarding great self defense insurance that really saved a self defender's bacon at trial?

If so, why aren't they prevalent?

Odd that we don't read many stories that would motivate/prompt a greater willingness for carriers to buy such insurance.

Or, am I just woefully under informed because yes, there are tons of such stories out there?

You'd think such insurers (or whatever they're technically called) would be the first to promote them.

I do not. But I have considered it on several occasions, especially when I was traveling more often than now.

Whether I have this or not is not part of the equation of whether I’m going to engage someone in self-defense.

I do not personally know anyone that has one of these plans and have had to use it. The only person I know who’s actually shot someone during a home invasion had zero criminal or civil impact because of it.

No stories of how having self defense insurance has really paid off?

    Not one?

    What are the odds?

It’s come up many times and been debated many times as to why their are no stories about being defended by these companies.

Best explanation I’ve heard is that these companies don’t provide the defense in house. Instead they have contracts with defense attorneys or pick one when needed so you will never hear of someone being defended by Texas Law Shield in court.

The other issue will likely be that only a small percentage of those who carry will opt for these insurance plans, and only a very small percentage of people who carry will ever find themselves in court. So the odds of a person having both insurance and ending up in court are pretty small. Then that person would have to choose to leave a review on an event they will most likely just want to forget.

My thoughts on the subject anyways. Worth what you paid. And I don’t use any of the self defense insurance companies.

In Texas, most of the time when there is a defense shooting that was justified, it hardly ever goes to court from what i have been told. Usually the local PD or Sheriff's office will do the initial investigation and if found to be a good shoot, nothing else is done. Now there will be some prosecutor that wants to add another notch to his belt and try to take it to court, but judge dismisses it before it gets to a trial. In Texas, if shooting is ruled justified, shooter is immune to civil suit, this may be the reason why we never hear about this. Now I have read some articles about how an institute like USCCA, ect has defended a shooter in court in other states, but haven't come across one in Texas.

Insurance is a weird game. You, the insured, are betting that you'll need the coverage while the insurance company is betting that you won't. If they're currently winning the bet, they may wanna keep it a secret.

If an insurance company isn’t winning that bet it will go out of business.

The other part is that insurance is designed to cover accidents and acts of god. NY state’s beef with the NRA is that by law, insurance covers accidents and acts of God. A shooting in self-defense is considered an intentional act.

Why they haven’t gone after the others suggests to me those policies are actually service plans, especially considering most are reimbursement based and require a not guilty determination before reimbursement.
