Interesting. I can't say I have heard of that before. What's the rationale for doing so?

Not sure what his is but, I do a similar thing. Pretty much a consistency thing. Pick the "center point" of my target, present my pistol, and fire. Not a target, per se, but, repetition in presentation, trigger pull, and sight picture hold. All of which I need major practice and work with.

This morning I unloaded a box of really old 148 gr HBWCs via a beat-up old Model 10. Simple pleasures are the best, sometimes.

Side note: I've got another box of this stuff and I need to chronograph it. The recoil was similar to old 1960s-vintage Super-X. I suspect the velocity was much, much higher than the weak-tea "target" loads currently sold by almost everyone.

What's the rationale for doing so?
I could write a chapter on this question but I'll try to keep it short.

For defensive training, we always hear about shooting "center mass" but too often there are scoring rings on a target and people get caught up trying to shoot 10s. A blank target is the easiest way to get people used to the notion of "point at the middle of the biggest part".

For precision shooting, the biggest impediment to success (arguably, of course) is failing to look at your front sight. The biggest distraction from looking at the front sight is looking at the target. If the target is blank, there's nothing there to distract the mind and draw the eye. You'd be surprised how often people shoot much smaller groups when they have a blank target presenting no distractions and are thus able to consistently stare at the front sight.

That's the intro. If you want, I can go off into the body/mind interactions that dictate, in practical terms, the use of the sub-six hold; the utility of triangle and vertical line targets; and the myth of "aim small, miss small". Whole books have been written about vernier acuity (which is hugely important when using iron sights and explains how silhouette shooters can shoot sub-MOA groups with simple iron sights on pistols), a skill that must be relied on to shoot well with iron sights but that is killed by distractions...such as having a bullseye or other aiming point on the target.

Ultimately, the mind and eye are highly skilled at finding the center of things and a blank target exploits that skill to help people shoot better, faster.

I just wish someone had been around to teach me all this stuff before I got old and diabetic and the associated retinopathy and peripheral neuropathy robbed me of my ability to shoot worth a damn. Look at that target in the previous post. I shot that double-action at 10 yards, shooting fairly quickly. I should be able to do somewhat better than that at 50 yards. Age may bring knowledge gained through experience but in every other way, it well and truly sucks.
