Lions seem to be mostly in west Tx. I gather they are not a protected species in this state. They can be sport hunted or shot for attacking domestic animals without a permit.
Hunting for meat is my thing. I don't think cat meat sounds like good table fare. Has anybody shout a Tx lion here?

How far east has anybody here spotted a wild cougar in Tx?

    Gunz are icky.
Saw one once while night hunting
Used to go varmint hunting for fur bearers.
Did the call them in thing.
One night a puma cat screamed near us. None of us had ever heard the sound before. Scared the crapola out of me but I knew what it was.
As hunting partner was doing the squeaking call I flipped on the spotlight. There about 200yds away was the cat. It was headed right for us. One of our guys got freaked out and started talking too loud. The cat stopped advancing toward us. It stood there about 10seconds then vanished.
    Never saw another in person.

I saw one south of Fort Stockton a few years ago.

And I would swear I saw a glimpse of one crossing a country road in a creek area north of Rockwall. It was just a glimpse from about 50 - 75 yards away. It was definitely a cat of some sort and was way too big for a bobcat. But I didn't get a good enough look at it, so I can't really say what it was for sure.

    Twice.

Lived in South Grand Prairie for a few years. There was a few sightings on the back side of the Dam of Joe Pool Lake. I was at a co-workers house one night. His subdivision backed up to a creek that fed down stream of the dam. Were out on the back porch. His fence was stockade on the sides but 6' black chain-link on the back so you could see the open area. All the sudden we see movement at the corner and see what we thought was a bobcat at first. Then it stood up and walked the length of the fence with its tail swishing behind. Was not a bob. Was a full sized cougar. The whole time it walked that 200 feet it was looking right at us like "what are you doin' here?" We reported it to the city and were told that they were trying to trap them.

Back in the '80s I was driving from Seymour to Crowell across the Waggoner ranch. It was early morning and one ran across the road right in front of me. If I had not braked I would have hit it. Only thing was I could have sworn it was black. I stopped in Crowell to get gas. Told the guy at the Allsups about it and he tells me that back in the day the Waggoner's would import game from Africa for hunts. Teddy R. and Quanah Parker for example. Said some never found, etc., etc. That a panther crossed with cougar, etc., etc. And that was where the Seymour Panthers got there name. Cannot vouch for the story but I know what I saw.

A friend saw a black one in Tyler a few years back. Early this summer someone captured one on their security camera in Tyler. And two were spotted (one was a Juvenile) on the side of the road in Tyler this summer.

A friend with a ranch in Palestine has seen a black one many times.

Keep in mind that these cats have huge territories, up to 100 square miles. So ones seen outside of Dallas may be the same as those in Tyler. That black one in Tyler is probably the same one in Palestine.

    That would be wrong
They are all over not just far west
One was caught on video last week near lake Fort Phantom near Abilene
Apparently. And in the Hill Country. We heard one has been hanging around Polly Peak Rd near Bandera. Reports are that it killed some livestock and supposition is that it may be rabid, as well. Good reason to carry around here...

Rarely spotted as far east as Central Texas.

More common in West Texas, of course.

Cougars in North America tend to hang out in mountains, desert and canyons mostly. They are not an open plains or flatland animal. They will naturally want to have trees nearby to escape enemies on the ground. They have to have deer for prey. Lions and coyotes tend to be in the same regions but I don't know how far east in Tx 'yotes, bears and wolves range.
