Depending on the persons preference of steels available... leaf springs are pretty popular for beginners to use. If they got cash to burn up learning they could have used flat bar stock from a steel supply house.

That, and files. I have old kitchen knives that my grandad made out of files and they sure hold an edge.

That’s a sweet knife. He put a lot of work into it, without a doubt.

One of the shop classes I had in HS was leathermaking. We started with Tandy kits then moved up to cutting our own patterns. In hindsight, it was fun.

Cool! I love knives. Especially one of a kind knives.

Doesn't look like D2 or any high Chromium steel. As has been said, "leaf spring" is a good guess for this sort of knife, which would approximate an AISI 5160.

A buddy taught me how to make knives.

We used 440 Vanadium and micarta handles for most, but not all knives.

He had a Phd in metallurgy, retired, had a great shop for knife making, but cancer finally got him.
