Had a Ruger P87(?) in 40 S&W. Didn't care for it. The safety on the slide where you pull it back bothered me. Sold it.

I would echo the Sig 228. I have one and its my favorite SA to shoot.

Kindred spirit. I hate safetys on the slide. OK, I hate safetys in general.

    That place east of Waco....
In addition to the Ruger P-Series guns, you should try to find a Star MegaStar. They make the Rugers look svelte....

My vote is for the p.38/p.1. Since you are familiar with Berettas, you'll be right at home with the walther.

Don't forget to check out the S&W DA/SA autos as well

I have 2 metal carry weapons I am looking at. The P01 Omega is the compact version of CZ's 75 SP01. I'll likely go this route. If my money were stacked higher, I would for sure get the Springfield Armory EMP 4 CCC.

    Yeah but they shoot great...lol
    What about a Baby Eagle?
    https://shopkahrfirearmsgroup.com/magnum-research/pistols/baby-eagle/

I did an evaluation of the Baby Eagle in 9mm by Magnum Research and the Jericho 941 by IWI as both are nearly the same pistol. I preferred the frame mounted safety and the better trigger performance of the Jericho over the slide mounted safety and the additional decocker feature of the Baby Eagle so in the end I got the Jericho 941.

    Gunz are icky.
A rare one you might find interesting is the Steyr GB.
    Very unique design.
Its one claim to fame is it lost out to the Glock when the Austrians wanted a new service pistol.

The Walther P-1 is a great piece.
WW2 era P-38's are very pricey but you should be able to find a nice P-1 for around $500.
Mags are easily available. Nicer grips are available too. Plenty of old military style holsters out there as well.
I've enjoyed the heck out of mine. Reliable. Accurate. Pleasant to shoot. What's not to like?
One thing with the P-1: stay with standard pressure ammo. NO P+.
Look for a P-1 with the re-enforcing crossbolt in the frame. These are the late versions and are a tad stronger than the earlier, non crossbolt guns.
P+ ammo can/will crack the aluminum frame.
The crossbolt is instantly identifiable by the hexhead bolt just above the trigger below the slide.

The Jericho 941 is a great pistol. It has both a steel slide and steel frame so it soaks up recoil very well. If you get one I recommend removing the 20# hammer spring it comes with and getting a lighter one for a smoother and easier trigger pull. I went with the 15# hammer spring. If you like your mags to easily fall out of the pistol when you eject them then go ahead and remove the magazine brake in the magazine well. The pistol will operate with no problems if it's removed. There are also tritium night sights available from Meprolite Tru-Dot as I mounted those on my Jericho as well.
