    When you are within 3 yards, you don't extend your firearm, unless you are offering it to the bad guy.

    Thank you so very much for the explanation. I had no idea I had been doing it all wrong for 50 years. I am sad I followed the advise of such dunderheads like Rex Applegate, Jim Cirillo, learning all those bad habits that will be hell to break. Even Wyatt Earp was wrong when he told Tom Mix to always have the gun at eye level and sighted on your target. And that looser, Applegate. I don't know how we won the war with all the O.S.S. operatives being trained in such a wrong manner.

    Yup, bent elbow for me from now on!

    4 times a year for 18.5 years. Oh, and what we call a body armor drill is simply a Mozambique.

    4 times a year?

    That's all?

    Man, I hate to break it to ya kingarthur, but there's gangbangers that practice once a week. Sometimes there was shootings with rival gangs 4 times a month. Even now, I shoot every Wednesday with the two little little guns I carry. Once a month the better half joins me, so she's getting 12 practice sessions a year.

    It sounds like you didn't take your potential job hazard all that serious. Jeez, even when my kids were still in school, we got to the range every Saturday morning all through junior high and high school. Does this sound like my daughter is a more experienced gun hand than your bunch?

    I'm sorry, 4 times a year ain't Jack, and Jack's on vacation in Vegas.

    Gotta admit, finding this rabbit-hole pretty funny myself :)

    That said, and to be entirely fair (just the personal opinion of a humble enthusiast of the martial sciences with a bit of bourbon in me and likely far less in the way of creds than most here, so ultimately worth what you paid for it), I do believe there are some pretty good points made all around...

    I get what KA is talking about in the way of point shooting (agree that the wording was somewhat amusing), but the comments on practice/study are also dead-on in my opinion - it takes significant practice for actual/practical point-shooting (especially at anything beyond contact distance; retention management is an entirely seperate topic), and thats on-top of slow deliberate practice with proper form & consideration of body mechanics.

    Deliberate, focused (e.g. mental engagement), and frequent practice has no substitute or equivalent, most especially in the case of perishable skills, and it's good to remember that yesterday's creds are today's irrelevancies. A good analogy for this type of deliberate practice amd impact might be:

    Kata = Kumite
    Kumite != Kata

    On a related note, for those of us without unlimited ammo budgets or sufficient land to crank off rounds from the back porch (someday!), I've found the SIRT trainers to be fantastic and worth the price of admission:

    https://nextleveltraining.com/product/sirt-110-training-pistol-2/

    You can do all kinds of training exercises with just the SIRT by itself, but one (or more) cheap webcams, some target printouts (or even a dot/feature on a wall), and some open source software and you can turn a house (or apt., hotel room, etc.) into an instant range...

    http://shootoffapp.com/

    Add a micro-projector and external speakers (can be done with spare monitor, but problematic/unreliable) and you can do steel challenges, shoot/no-shoot drills, etc. while sitting on the couch, at the kitchen table, etc. (think random start-tone with seated draw and target engagement, shot markers, par/split time tracking, etc). This is also great for practicing point-shooting from odd angles/positions, as long as one remembers to account for body mechanics and recoil/slide-travel which you don't get with the trainer (helps not only with eye/hand coordination but also separating what's feasible w/ practice from that which isn't).

    Since getting one of these, it's not unusual for me to spend upwards of an hour (or more) each day (most days anyway) doing either scored or control-based laser/dry-fire practice, often while multitasking...Boring/extraneous conference calls (make sure on mute!), watching tv/movies on the rare occasion I have for that, watching the kids play, etc.; practice opportunities become nearly endless, and these things will give your hand/trigger-finger one hell of a workout over time...

    whew...that was a bit longer than planned, sooner or later need to learn not to drink and post!

    Oh, back on topic - daily carry is most often a Glock 19, sometimes a G17 depending on the day, and more infrequently either a G26 or G43 based on situational considerations (plus HL light, blade(s), few other odds & ends, etc.) Off-the-beaten track and will often add to that either a .357mag or .44mag wheelgun (plus rifle/sbr as appropriate), but planning to switch over to a G20 loaded hot for most non-urban carry...

    ETA: wanted to add a cautionary note for using that trainer as indicated, is critically important to be very deliberate about making sure that no live firearms are present and/or immediately near your person prior to setting up for practice; sooner or later complacency can strike anyone and bad things can happen then (though I see no additional risk from any rifles nearby).

    I just went through the first 8 or so pages of this thread.
    Sure are a bunch of people around back then that didn't stay too long, or at least never post anymore.

    Hahah, that may very well be the last time it was called that in training settings.

    Possibly, LOL.

    Mudgett pointed out the name of the drill might be misconstrued as having racial overtones. He asked Cooper if he could be allowed to call it the Failure Drill.

    If I called it the Mozambique drill it never would have been approved by the various Chiefs who had to sing off on it. American LE might still be prevented from training for head shots as they were before I got this accepted. We spent a day on the range with 9 LAPD Chiefs and convinced them the Failure Drill was a valid tactic. The Failure Drill was immediately made a part of all LAPD qualification courses and it spread through out the American LE community. I rest my case.

P 226 .40 cal when headed off to the sports grill or bloomer shucking contests etc. For around the house..taking out the trash..getting the mail...etc. I keep a five shot NAA brand .22 stuffed in the right front of the gym shorts or grandpa pants. I know it aint much but think it would beat a handful of rocks.hopefully
