Hey guys. So we popped into academy today after the gun show to see if they had a little 22 plinkster in stock for the hell of it. They did. I bought it and was able to use my LTC to bypass nics. I was surprised because I’ve heard in the past they usually run a nics anyway. So all good there.

However, the counter kid said he had just been to some kinda conference with the atf recently. The atf is apparently heavily encouraging all FFLs to use “extreme discretion” in allowing an LTC holder to bypass nics. To me this seems like it’ll make some FFLs think they should just run a nics either way. Which is interesting.

I know it’s a discretionary thing in the first place but it seems they’re putting a little more emphasis on it now. As someone who’s nics gets delayed for several days every time, if you won’t take my LTC, you won’t be taking my money.

I just found this conversation interesting and, of course, it could just be heresay but I figured I’d share.

Also, fwiw, academy takes a damn long time to sell a gun. Walked in, knew what I wanted, found it, inspected, agreed to buy. I was in there for a damn hour between waiting for the one tablet to do a 4473 and the manager double checking every letter on the form.

Yes, it’s a real PITA to buy guns from Academy. Plan on 30 mins after the 4473 is done at minimum. If someone else is in front of you, then you are screwed. I dont really consider them anymore for this very reason. And on top of that, you get the walk of shame and have to wait in line yet again to check out.

My FFL gets me out the door in (I’m just guessing here) about 15 minutes or so.

I quit buying firearms at Academy after they decided to quit selling most scary black guns. The last time I bought there they were still doing NICS even though I'm licensed. Took longer than an hour. I will at times buy ammo though.

I’ve bought several from Academy. Wasn’t a pain. Didn’t run nics. Didn’t take very long.

Must vary by store. Guess I’ll avoid the Mission store.

For reference it was the store in Pharr. Though I doubt the McAllen store is any better. The few times I’ve been in there they’re packed and the ammo looks like someone picked a few rounds out of some of the boxes.

Yea I try not to support crap like that. But getting the 22 made the wife happy so can’t complain. I’ve also heard that about them always running nics. I actually called to ask before I went over. They usually have some decent deals on ammo though I did better at the gun show today in that regard.

Yea nothing like getting escorted to the door with your new gun while carrying a loaded one.

I was laughing about that to myself too. Like dude I just handed you my ltc, if you’re not an idiot you must assume I’m already armed. Not much else I’m gonna do with a little 22 lol.

Bought a Gp100 a year ago at Academy. Asked about nics and they said they don’t for ltc. What I don’t like is that you can’t dry fire anything.

Was at Academy today and picked up a 9mm for summer. My CZ97 is difficult to dress around in the heat. A 9mm is smaller, so I've go that going for me. All in all, took a few minutes, maybe 12-15 minutes? or so, to get through it, but not intolerable.
I shopped ammo and some fishing lures for crappie during the time and was then ready to go. No issues actually.

Grabagun is faster, but there's nothing to look at while waiting, so I'm bored for the little while I'm there.

+1 on the comment about walking to the door. Sales guy is escorting me to the door with an unloaded 9mm and I'm right next to him with a .45 Auto filled with 11 rounds. Kinda dumb and funny at the same time, but not the end of the world.

Just join and support a local gun range, buy your firearms from a place online like grabagun.com, have them sent to your range, piece of cake. .

That’s what I usually do though I haven’t joined yet. This was just more of an impulse thing.

I hate academy. Only big box store worth a shit was at the time sportsman’s. Still text a former employee to this day to catch up and wish well.

Academy doesn’t promote or have people that will build reliable customers. I can walk into any of them and no one will ask if I’d like to look at something or try to sell anything. Bunch of poofters.

I worked for them for a short time, I was mainly stocking shelves in the early morning before the store opened. I was considered part time, they wanted me to work full time hours. That way I didn't get any benefits. I knew more about guns than the young guy selling them.

    Re ‘’ATF’’

I’ve been having lunch w/ ATF Field Agents occasionally in recent years.

There must be a big disconnect b/t the political appointees at the top offices and those Guys.

They insist that they have never heard any instructions to interfere with, or even to monitor, licensed dealers; only to provide technical advice if asked. They will respond to a dealer’s location, if called.

They tell of tracking down criminals, often with U S Marshalls, of testing seized guns, and of preparing evidence for trial.

I do hear that there was a massive increase in prosecutions of « Felon in Possession » cases b/t Obama & Trump, but little change w/ the current usurpers in charge.

IDK if there is a separate « division » to check-up to dealers, as there used to be, or not.

This is my understanding after numerous casual conversations.

For years, I had lunch with the USBP guys @ Brownsville, and heard their « sides of the stories », so I was able to ‘’defend’’ them later.

Unlike long ago; most of today’s LEO encounter mishaps are caused by the other person.
