What sight, as in reticle/dot size. Too big a dot will be useless depending on target and distance.

Most of those will cover a torso at 100 yards unless it's a donut type.

2moa dot will cover 4 inches at 100 yards and 8 inches at 200 yards. So that's a head sized target at 200 yards will be coverd by the dot.

308 rifle is capable of much finer accuracy than that.

Depending on use I would sight it in at 100 or 150.

There are scopes more appropriate foe the round if you want to shoot farther. The aimpoint pro is intended for 100 yard patrol rifles.

This is a Blackhawk down type rifle, 100 yards to sight it in?
    I would with that optic.

Just realise your ability to take precise shots at the longer distance will be degraded.

You can pretty Easily still hit center mass at 300 yards but you couldn't be precise on targets completely coverd by the dot at that range, even though the round and rifle is capable.

You trade lighting fast shots closer for the loss of precision farther. Perfectly acceptable for what you're talking. Frankly that's the whole point of the dot scopes.

2 MOA dot is 2" at 100 yards and 4" at 200 yards. Approximately 1" per 100 yards. If you know the moa size of the dot, you can use them to hold over/under if you know the bullet path. The farther you zero, the more accurate your zero will be to a point.
With a 3 moa dot, I use a 3"-4" stick on target and zero at 100 yards. Easy head shot to at least 150 yards and torso shots farther depending on caliber and drop.

There are videos on how to use the dot for hold overs but I can't find them right now.

Either 36yds which may also be a pretty good 300yd zero (works withM855, not sure how close 308!would be) or just zero for 50-75 yds.

My SOCOM 16 with a Comp M4S is currently zeroed at 100 but I’ll be bringing it back to either 50 or 36.
