IMO, this is probably a weather balloon. Only thing it has been doing is taking weather measurements, and sending them back to China. Shoot it down, and that is what we will find out, and look stupid in front of the world. Of course we could lie about it.

However, it was not off course. It was on course as its true mission though, was not weather collection but to test how we would react to an incursion of our air space and we failed miserably. And as noted, they intentionally did not put spy sensors on it for deniability in case we did shoot it down.

Weather balloons are so like, 1950 !

We have satellites, Doppler Radar, PIREPS, laser ceiling-finders, high altitude drones, and stuff they won’t even tell us about now.

I call it the ‘’PUBLIC DISTRACTION BALLOON’’ !

The wreckage is within 12 miles zone, how come they worry China may reach it first? Does that mean our sea border is not secure too?

    wasnt that a decayed orbit?

Anyway back on topic - also interesting is 9X engaged target well outside its envelope spec. Possibly highest engagement ever but not sure if all of the Chinese U2 shootdowns were SAMs.

Definitely the highest A2A engagement ever (unless you count the F-15 ASAT shot), and the F-22's first kill.

Now the CCP plays the victim card.
And says it was a "civilian" project.
I am telling ya, when they recover and open the payload, it is gonna be all civilian weather equipment. We were played.

So our fighters don't have guns on them anymore...

They tried that in the 60s with the F-4 Phantom. Then they tried adding external gun pods because the gun was needed in A2A combat against MiG-17s and MiG-19s. Finally, in 1967 the F-4E was introduced with an internal 20mm cannon. Those early Phantom variants were the last USAF fighters without a gun.
