I might be wrong about hitting it with an AMRAAM - the AIM-120 AMRAAM's maximum effective altitude is publicly released as 50,000 ft...since that's typically as high as military jets can reach. It probably has a higher actual effective ceiling, but it might not quite be 60,000 ft. No way to know...and those who do know can't tell us.

U2s at 75,000 plus and they quit overflying hostile territory because either SAMs or air launch could reach them.

I don’t remember how many SAMs were shot at SR71s but only one connection for very minor damage. They could reach the SR at 90ish thou, they just couldn’t catch it.

SR-71s flew at around 90,000 feet and at Mach 3.2 - the speed was required to keep them at altitude, and both kept them just about untouchable. An A-12 - the CIA's single-seat precursor to the SR - had one single fingernail-sized piece of shrapnel from a SAM embed itself in the aircraft's skin. It's the only time a Blackbird was touched by a hostile missile.

And you're right, we can knock it down...but then it might land on someone. Plus, it would take an administration that's wiling to stand up to China, and no Democrat is going to do that.
