Well I have to give them this...during the last few years they were the slowest to raise prices and did have some availability of several hard to find calibers. I'll continue to give them some business when the price is right. I do find it comical that they won't sell braced guns or AKs anymore considering it's the only place I have ever witnessed a blatant straw purchase. Thug punk goes up to counter, points at Glock. GF says, that one? Thug proceeds to pull cash out of back pocket and hands it to her. Employee completes check and sale to her.

Seen that more than once there in my years. They've put a lot more people in danger through straw purchase than any other store I can think of.

Academy has always been anal about gun sales.
They even run a background check on LTC folks.
Once I ordered a .22mag bolt rifle from their website. Paid for it too. When it arrived at the store I went to get it. 1.5 HOURS from entering to leaving. Every yahoo in that store had to check, recheck, and check again. This was using the electronic 4473 to boot. Hory Clap. Thought I’d never get out of there.
I’ve resigned myself to the fact Academy employs the best rocket surgeons and brain scientists available. Just gotta roll with it.
My local gun pusher still does paper 4473’s. I’m outta there in 10-15 minutes tops.
I've heard stories about them runing NICS checks on LTS holders. I've purchased guns at 3 different Academy's in DFW and they didn't do a NICS check for me.

I have a choice between Academy, Walmart and some local guns stores and pawn shops to buy guns. I've chosen Academy more times than the others combined because they had what I needed when I needed it (unlike Walmart) and because their prices on ammo were the best in store prices around here (unlike the gun shops that have prices up to three times that of academy for the same ammo). Academy also kept their prices low after the first and later waves of panic buying post Biden and during Covid. Right now, I get much better prices online but Academy still has the best prices in store in town for the most part.

I've never done a transfer at Academy, for that I have firearms sent to a local range where I do the transfers. Two local indoor ranges here charge $20 per transfer if you have an LTC, otherwise it's $25 per. If Academy charges $60, my guess would be because, as someone said above, they are trying to discourage transfers to avoid lawsuits down the road.

The Gochman family Academy is what most of us grew up with. I think they did a pretty good job catering to Texans needs. KKR has done a decent job with still keeping prices affordable on their items.

I agree with Glen B, about their pricing on ammo compared to most LGS. Is it as cheap as online.... no, but for a walk in brick & mortar location for convenience definitely cheaper than most LGS's.

    Tyler "suburbs"... :)
Academy prices are ridiculous for a flipping fishing/boonie hat, socks, wife/daughter's sport bras, etc. are like the markup at duluthtrading.com...
I'm doing more shopping for clothes on Amazon, or Walmart.com these days, the retail brick and mortar are less apprealing on the daily, as I am not looking for the latest hipster ball-hugging/pre-shreadded jeans, or some dude named Billie Eilish's shirts.

Their "free-shipping" didn't include just 200rd of ammo, no matter how much in clothing I put in the cart...
I said screw it, I needed the ammo, and dropped all the sundries for the wife and daughter out of the cart, and just paid the ammo shipping fee.

I stop in there mainly for ammo, if on the way to a range-trip, but won't buy any clothes unless they are on clearance/major-sale.

Academy is for Tee shirts, lawn chairs, & ice chest parts. . . .

Don’t forget that awesome selection of BBQ rubs. I pretty much only buy them there these days.

I bought two rifles this year from 2 different academys one in Mckinney and one in Mesquite. Prices were the lowest anywhere and no transfer fee. In fact I got an additional 30% off on my RAR thanks to the Manager for having to wait so long. I have a home based FFL that does my online purchase transfers for 10 bucks

KKR bought out the Randalls/Tom Thumb chain which started their demise..
