According to an online Fox News story, the new Chief of Police for Austin, the old "interim COP" said that without the student pipeline being open and the 1/3 budget cuts, certain services with be done via 311 calls and on-line reports.

I surfed the APD webpage but didn't find a handout or slide show with what warrants a police response and what is "self serve".

According to the article, collisions without injuries are 311 reports. No police presence will sent. But what if the vehicle is unmovable and is blocking traffic? You can have a disabled car, block traffic, and still not have anyone injured. Or the other example given; burglaries when the perpetrator is not present are 311 reports. How am I to know if the bad people are still in my house/place of business? No one in their right mind goes into a building and clears it themselves.

Maybe the Austin city council will take a page from Lori Lightfoot and "refund the police" to campaign for re-election.

This is a farcical posting as I can't sleep and wanted something to do.

PS: I wonder why the City Manager/Council didn't hire a woman of color with plenty of experience for Chief of Police? Not liberal enough??

Sister’s neighbors called to report a man on security camera trying to break into vehicles. APD said they didn’t have the time or manpower to investigate.

Everyone in Austin who voted for this will pay in spades. Unfortunately, the people who knew better and voted accordingly will have to pay as well.

Are they gonna hire social workers to respond to nut-job cases too? Or maybe do what Portland (Oregon) did and try hiring a bunch of unarmed 'police services specialists' to take over low priority cases, so the big scary cops with the scary black guns don't show up and randomly execute poor minorities on their way to doctor school? Last I knew, they couldn't even get enough qualified applicants for those jobs either.

I'm coming around to Tim Pool's way of thinking - just defund and dismantle the police already and let the citizenry sort it out. More and more cops with a conscience are quitting because of the bullshit policies being handed down and eventually we're going to have police forces largely comprised of the kinds of cops none of us want, the ones who will gleefully execute gun-seizure orders, club citizens for nothing, arrest people for nothing - you know, the shit we're seeing in Australia right now.

Yeah, it will be painful for a while, but those with the means to protect themselves won't have to worry about going to jail because they just shot some asshole who was trying to kill them or burn their house down, or take everything from their small business or whatever. Neighbors might well band together to protect their communities from looters and gang bangers. No cops at all means no one coming to collect your guns, no one coming to haul *you* away for keeping the mobs at bay, and no one to protect the vile politicians responsible for the whole mess in the first place.

I had a friend who was a cop. He did something like twelve years as a paid officer, and was a volunteer for five or six before that. He couldn't do it anymore - he said he couldn't go to work and deal with people who hated him, who wanted to see him dead, who hated his very existence because of the blue suit he wore, then go home and try to be cheery and be the good loving husband and dad. He left the job and went private sector and now is a district manager for a major auto parts chain.

He said its nice not having to wear body armor to work, and dealing with people who are happy to see him. No more mandatory court on "off" days, no more fighting with tweakers, drunks, and schitzos.

I've seen some of his dash cam footage and watched an incident where he was taking the slack out of his Glock's trigger because of a dumbshit with a gun in his center console - the guy must've had Jesus bitchslap him, because a split second before the shot broke, the guy stopped, put his hands up, and started complying. He showed another dash cam video of a pursuit and arrest made on some dumb bitch that had a suspended license, who accused him of "abuse" during the arrest, and the damn liberal judge dismissed the eluding charges and released her on recog.

It seems, especially in bigger cities / agencies that the turds float to the top and you get corrupt or inept (or both) people in authority positions, while the ones who *should* be in charge, dont' want that headache, or just want to do their job, get their retirement, and pray they don't get jacked up or killed before then.

First saw this in Detroit after their bankruptcy. That was also when the Chief of the DPD said get a gun as we can't save you. Next read about it in England. It was the Metropolitan police (London) that went to it - something about needing more officers to investigate "hate" crimes.

    The shortage is real.
APD has lost hundreds of officers and is staffed at the same level as it was in 2008 when the population was half of what it is today.

The shortage will get much worse.
Almost five years ago, the City played dirty and pushed APD into a terrible contract. Only a few officers think the city will do anything but try to shove another bad contract down our throat and cut every financial benefit we have fought for, the largest of which is the sell back of earned comp and vacation time upon retirement and any Officer, Cpl, Detective, Sgt who has the time to retire will. The last I heard there will be around 200 will have time enough to drop paper early 2022 and I know of no one with time who won't leave as soon as they can. Running one academy a year, outputting 75ish officers won't come close to matching the bleeding of 150-200 officers a year we have had the last two years.

By 2022 APD will be staffed at the same number of officers as it was around the year 2000...

Buckle up because we are along for a ride.

Sounds like the same story playing out here as in other big liberal run cities. Over on the left coast, Portland Police has been hurting and under staffed for years. They started reducing their qualifications - they used to require a bachelors or better just to apply, then it dropped to an associates degree, last I knew they reduced to the state standard of a High School Diploma or GED. They don't DQ for MJ use, and with decriminalization of hard drugs - they're probably not drug testing applicants at all at this point. Starting pay was among the highest in the state, but the city did NOT have the backs of the police, they burn thru Chiefs in under two years, typically, and they suffer from the same lack of leadership that the officer who wrote that anonymous note mentioned.

Seattle PD likewise has been seeing an exodus for years, and a lack of recruits to fill vacancies.

You cannot throw enough money at the "right" applicants when you don't respect them, won't stand behind them, and when you consistently throw them under the bus. Only those ultimately unfit for the job will jump at it for the pay or the power - and the people and the good cops just trying to make it to retirement are the ones who will suffer the consequences.

My days of interest in pursuing that line of work are behind me, but Austin seems like another Portland to me (they even use the same stupid "keep ___ weird" motto too...) The voters are really ultimately to blame, because they keep putting the people into power who are creating the policies and problems who cannot legislate or regulate their way out of a paper bag.

Back in the 90's Washington, DC, was paying for not doing full background checks - something about speeding up the process for hiring. The result was police providing information to drug dealers, providing security for drug dealers, and even dealing drugs themselves. If memory serves, they even killed a LEO to boot.

On another forum, a current citizen of Austin claims he had not heard about the new non-emergency response procedures as well as saying that there is no correlation between the presence of police and reduction in crime. They also said the APD budget is at the highest ever.

I think I might need to try what they are smoking.

I mentioned earlier that Austin is becoming much like the left coast metropolises...

the city of Seattle is facing an emergency because of their stupid jab mandates:

They have decided that all sworn personnel shall now report to work in uniform, ready for patrol assignments regardless of position - the detectives and special unit people are back on the beat. There are over 200 officers who haven't taken the Coof Juice, and in 5 days those officers will be out of a job if they don't "comply" or be allowed a religious / medical exemption. This is in an agency with less than 1,000 current sworn personnel, that was already in the midst of a shortage of officers even before the BLM / George Floyd nonsense - Seattle has had a hard time recruiting new officers because like other liberal cities, they throw cops under the bus and blame them when situations break bad. Crazy guy with a knife refuses to comply, cops shoot him - cops are labelled the bad guys, city's insurance pays out over wrongful death settlements. Drug addicts shooting up heroin on the sidewalks and leaving needles on your door step? Its all good, man - the city decriminalized hard drugs years ago thru prosecutors declining to charge them, and the city policy won't allow them to be arrested anymore. Drug zombies everywhere. Petty crimes are up, prosecutions are down and the police aren't allowed to do their jobs. Then you get last years stupidity with "The CHAZ" where city "leaders" abandoned a police precinct and ordered the cops to pull back. That lead to the deaths of multiple individuals when the warlords started shooting people. Rapes were frequent. The warlords tried extorting local businesses and residents. The city did NOTHING.

If Austin's citizens don't change how they vote and demand change from their "leaders" - the same will happen there.

At some point, the backlog of cases that would normally be investigated and cleared by detectives and those special units will reach critical mass and might just offer an enterprising individual or group a real opportunity to clean up their streets.
