Marine Corps Systems Command began fielding the M18 Modular Handgun System in September 2020. This striker-fired, semi-automatic, 9-mm pistol is based on the Sig Sauer Model P320.

    Read details here.

I carried the venerable Colt 1911 during the 1960s-70s along with M-14/M-16.

Always was kind of ashamed of our little S&W .38's. But over 4 years I saw the horrible conditions that the guns endured. Rode hard and pot away wet. Yet I never saw or had one fail. And the ammo was treated worse.
Hope this one is what the politically correct commanders want as it is replacing a proven platform that will outlive the plastic by many decades. Again I ask, How often do you see a bidding battle for a Gen. 1 Glock? Now try to find a 1911 bring back for less that a small house. But the little bitches that cried cause its too loud and does not fit their girly hands are happy.
And they can waste my taxes on other things like pink helmets. And conversion kits so some can pack .25 acp and not scratch their nails from the nasty 9mm.

EDIT I understand that once you raise your hand you serve a the pleasure of your leaders and you carry what they decide. No matter how you feel standing in front of a Priority A aircraft with a nuclear mission carrying a .38 and 18 bullets.

The M17 and M18 are great pistols. While I'm not a fan of 9 mm, I do understand why the military wants to go that route. Unlike the M9, the Sigs are light weight and very easy to clean or repair. I'm a huge fan of the 1911 platform, but I find that many times I'll take my P320 to the range just because it will take me less time to clean when I get home. And I do have one in 45 ACP, so that makes it even sweeter.

Truly with all due respect, I have no clue as to the meaning of your post. Are you trying to say that S&W 38 Special revolvers were better than the Beretta M9 and that politically correct decisions made by commanders are the way to go as opposed to a proven platform? Or are you trying to uphold the myth that the Colt 1911 is superior to all other choices? Then you throw in something about conversion kits to 25 ACP and pink helmetsand not scratching fingernails. Please, explain, exactly what you mean by all that because I am totally befuddled by your reply,

Those .38s were very tempting as there were hanging so near the first on the right in a Phrog helioteam.

I've seen and read so much about the wussiefacation of our military. I was in at the end of Vietnam. After my era basics had to run in tennis shoes. We ran in combat boots cause Uncle Ho was not going to stop and wait while we changed shoes before killing us. People claimed the M9 was too thick, we carried what we were issued and trained
My opinions are simple, but my own.
The 1911 is a proven platform. Its time has passed.
If you have to have a 9mm the Beretta proved to be a great choice.
No gun fits everybody but anybody not a wussie can shoot an M9
The Air Force .38's were proof our commanders lived through WWII and wanted to stay there.
The new Sigs are a fix to a problem the military does not have, As socialism continues to infiltrate the military the wussies will find a gripe about everything. The idea being to make a less cohesive team that will blow off the Constitution and stand for political leaders against Americans. Has to happen
The military handgun is a last resort defensive weapon. Being such it is not that important. It is more important to match ammo sources around the globe.
The world should have chosen the 45acp

My son is a staff sergeant in the Marine Corp on an MEU and he’s pretty happy with it. Bought his own 320 cause he liked it so much. I personally like just about anything that reliably goes bang when it’s supposed to and have a mix of Sig, Glock, HK, Springfield, etc in hammer fired, striker fired, metal and plastic.

I have never seen that but, then again, I've never looked. Why would anyone do that? Don't tell me people pay more than $400 or so for those old things; they're nothing special.

Side note - My sister still carries a Gen 1 G17. It's been her carry gun since the 1990s when she bought it used for a good price. She sees no reason to change.
