I also find that when I am helping someone learn to shoot it helps to start with a small caliber like a .22 and move up from there. Not to mention being cheaper. A lot of times I will move them from a .22 to a .32 or .38 for their first center fire handgun rather than jump to 9mm/45 or .357. In the few people that I have helped it seemed to be easier to get them not to start a flinch as the recoil is milder and they learned to handle and not be afraid of it.

A lot of people associate the loud report with recoil, especially those new to guns. In their thought process, the louder the gun, the more it's going to recoil, so many do develop a flinch from guns that have louder reports.

I think your method is on track though for new shooters.

Just a curiosity question. Do you think think it's best to own multiple handguns in the same caliber or do you feel you should have several different caliber handguns in your collection? Do you feel there's a point where you have "too many" pistols in the same caliber? I know answers will vary, I just wanted to hear some different opinions.
    -Commonality is great!
    -So is variety!
    -“Too many” is blasphemy!

That said…about 2 years ago I sold and traded my hand guns and corresponding ammunition down to four (five if you count C&B) specific calibres, that I have several of.

I'm down to 9mm, 12 gage, 556. Ammo.is just too expensive to have all the calibers I used to.

We just added 380 for the wife

So yes all handguns are one caliber now. As much as I miss 45acp I doubt I will buy any handguns in that caliber. I want a 10mm piece too but I resist.

    Hello,

There is nothing wrong with that - downsizing all firearms and/or caliber consolidation. You have your bases covered for what works for you as an individual and your wife does too.

You can concentrate on your 'planning ahead and stock on hand' more in what you own the most of in my opinion.

I no longer own or shoot handguns due to my hand issues but I used to have several handguns (And rifles.) in matching calibers and some that were not.

I only shoot rifles and in only 2 calibers now - 22lr and 22wmr.

When my MT husband downsized several years before his retirement and did some caliber consolidation in ALL of his firearms... it made it somewhat easier for him too.

It made his reloading supplies easier to plan for, he has reloaded since the early 70's, his RF stock went up a bit, and he kept a bit of factory CF ammunition in 45acp and 30-30 Win. on hand too.

His handguns are only in 45acp and in 22lr now on purpose. Plus he has some old age, one old accident and long term work related hand issues so he made some changes due to those physical issues. Plus to simplify things!

    His rifle calibers are in:

    22lr
22wmr (He and I have matching rifles in this caliber.)
    .223
    30-30 Winchester
    30-06
    45-70 Government

He is thinking about dropping one rifle caliber but he has not made up his mind.

We can 'share' our ammunition too. Since I do not shoot that much any longer due to my age and physical issues... I gave him a BUNCH of my RF ammunition.

We have never run short or been out of stock. All during past and PRESENT shortages... we kept on shooting using our former and presently owned firearms and former and PRESENT firearm calibers from a to z.

He sold his final and last shotgun several years ago. A sweet Remington 870 Marine Magnum. I do not know if he will buy another one again or not. I doubt it.

He is happy with his decision and it works for HIM.

I am happy with my decision and it works for ME.

I figure people should do what works for them on an individual basis.

He shoots about 4 or 5 out of 7 days a week. Year round and even with snow/ice on the ground. He has special ice cleats if he needs them for his shoes or boots. I have a set too.

He may shoot a bit less PER SESSION with some firearms due to his age or physical issues but he is still enjoying the outdoors, shooting, hiking/walking/exercising, hunting, fishing and meeting his friends at the range and gym.

Western Montana Fish & Game Association - The WMFG is a membership based organization that privately owns and operates the Deer Creek Shooting Center in East Missoula Montana (wmfga.org)

He can shoot on state or federal land too. Tons of that around here.

But he prefers to shoot at his range which is NOT that far from our home. Some of his old friends go there and one of the directors is a close friend of his too.

Good shooting to you and your wife! Take care.

My first gun was a 9MM pistol, and then I bought a 9MM carbine as well. I then bought a 3rd 9MM, another pistol. But to be honest I think I'm fine with 1 pistol and 1 carbine, gonna move on to a larger round next.

There are certain calibers that I buy guns for and certain guns that I’d buy a specific caliber for.

Example: 22LR, 9mm, .45, .233/5.56, .308/7.62 and 12 gauge are calibers that I stock ammo and buy multiple guns for.

M1 Garand or M1 Carbine are guns that I’d start buying a specific caliber of ammo for.

Well lets see....I have three .41magnums, four 10mm handguns, three 45acp handguns, two 9mm handguns and one carbine, three .22LR handguns, five .223 rifles, three .308 rifles and three 12ga shotguns. I shoot them all and they all have their own nuances. I like being proficient with more than just one firearm of any caliber.
