You ever seen a bowling ball mortar? I seen one guy loose 4 bowling balls one weekend. IIRC he brought 10. Same thing with golfball launcher & just about any king of launcher there are. If you not loose projectiles your not having fun!
I have not seen or heard of it, but I'm about to go down a YouTube rabbit hole to look that up because that sounds REALLY fun !!!

I think I would 3D-print a can-sized object so it could be used over and over again.

Use tennis balls. I think those fit in the can cannon AR-15 uppers and they're not going to break. For something designed for slim cans, maybe a golf ball would work?

3d printing might work too. I think there's a guy on Reddit working on designing a 3D printed 40mm round for use in grenade launchers. I'm not sure how many times it can be reused, but it's a cool concept.

The guy who owns the mortar also had a golf ball launcher on SKS. Used balls were cheap, blanks were cheap and it pointed like a rifle! The balls were plenty visible out to distances.

It was cool in watching the ball hook off target.
