Why do so many tactical shotguns have 4+1 instead of 5+1 or more capacity?

I'm browsing shotguns on Atlantic Firearms. I think they're all imported from China or Turkey. What frustrates me is that so many of the pump and semiauto shotguns with tube mags have only 4+1 capacity. Why don't they all have 5+1 by default?

Probably import restrictions on mag capacity would be my guess. I'd caution against buying anyone of these no name imports due to lack of aftermarket support and spare parts availability. Ten years down the road when they are no longer being imported good luck on support if your gun goes down.

Imported shotguns by definition are Destructive Devices unless they get a Sporting Use waiver. Reduced magazine capacity is one of the ways they get it. Sometime after 1968, ATF decided most states hunting regs limited capacity to 4+1, so here we are.

    To All,

FWIW, SOME Asian nations have a law that restricts shotguns to FIVE rounds. - I suspect that that is the answer.

Spare parts for a lot of foreign-made shotguns are hard to find if something breaks or wears out.
(BUY American is a good plan, imvho.)

    yours, satx

Just out of curiosity, how many Asian nations are importing shotguns into the United States at any given time?

And which Asian nations as well?

What about shotguns made in Turkey?

I have a Mossberg 88. I had to remove the chamber pin to increase the chamber capacity since I use it for home protection. Not because it was built in another country, but because you can’t hunt with a shotgun with anything higher than 4+1.
If you get caught by a game warden with the chamber pin removed you can be fined.

You don't know very much about Texas Game Laws, or Federal Migratory Bird laws do you? Or guns for that matter.

Go ahead and start hunting with five rounds in your shotgun! Read carefully and educate yourself a little.

    • A shotgun is the only legal firearm for hunting migratory game birds. Shotguns must not be larger than 10-gauge, must be fired from the shoulder, and must be incapable of holding more than three shells. Shotguns capable of holding more than three shells must be plugged with a one-piece filler which cannot be removed without disassembling the gun, so the gun’s total capacity does not exceed three shells.

BTW, it's a Maverick 88. They are owned by Mossberg and are made and assembled right here in Texas.

It’s a Mossberg Maverick 88. The same way theres a Ford Mustang 5.0. I know what I have

and yes. You can be fined for removing the pin (or filler if you want to call it that) while hunting.

I have friends that are game wardens (in Texas) believe it or not.

my Mossberg 88 shotgun holds 5+1 with 2 3/4” shells

Hmmm....I have one as well. It happens to be the third one I have owned over the years. Maverick happens to be a separate company from Mossberg, which Mossberg happens to be a stockholder in. Maverick is corporate affiliate of Mossberg.

It's not a chamber pin. It's called a magazine tube plug.

And if you had friends that were game wardens, then you should have known that anything more than 3 shells in a shotgun while hunting is illegal in Texas, as well as being a federal game law violation, and would not be posting misleading or false information.
