I found a rusty 10/22 in the chicken house left there by my dad who passed away this summer. Barrel has a dirt dobber mud nest plugged on the muzzle end. The barrel is pretty rusty and the action ain’t great.
What would y’all do with such a rifle? Put another cheap take-off barrel on it? Scrap it? Something else? Looking for ideas.

My condolences. Lost my Dad in '05 and ne'er a day passes . . .

DEF NOT scrap it! At the very least make it a wall hanger, as is. Any idea why he left there? Could be an interesting story.

How rusty is it? Can you post a photo? I would try to clean it up if it's not too bad. Light rust can be removed with very fine 0000 steel wool and gun oil or 3-in-1 oil. The dobber nest shouldn't be hard to clean out if you can remove the barrel. How long was it out in the chicken coop?

I'd like to be able to say if it had been my father's rifle, I'd cherish it but my old man was an absolute POS and a monster and I thank my mom for divorcing him when I as about 8 years old back when divorce, for any reason, was truly considered by many to be a very shameful thing. My guess is though that you and your dad had a good life together for you to be asking this and I'd have to say do what I'd have done had it been likewise for me and my dad - cherish it as a family heirloom. I'd clean it up and not change anything else about it if it cleaned up okay. Good luck with it and my condolences over the loss of your dad.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Just to clarify a few things. It’s certainly not a sentimental or heirloom piece, he left several others of those. Why was it left in the chicken house? Who knows? He may have stashed it there to shoot rats with, maybe he was on his way to town and needed it out of the front seat. There is no telling!

I removed the barrel and the action from the stock. Currently have the barrel upright in a padded vise and squirted some oil down it to help loosen the mud. I’ll tear into the action later. The stock is black synthetic, nothing fancy.

The barrel is in rough shape. I’ll more than likely be looking for a factory take-off tapered barrel. So no pictures, I’m traveling this weekend.

Sorry for the waaaaaay over due pics. Here’s what it looks like. Decided I’ll just find a factory barrel from eBay or next gun show I attend, clean up the action and return it to stock. It’ll make a good snake and vermin killer around the farm. But this has inspired me to possible build a fancy 10/22 one day. There are so many cool aftermarket companies.

Where are you located? I have a factory barrel and wood stock I would part with. I put an aftermarket barrel and Magpul stock on mine. Sure we can work something out.

What Hoji said. Those dirt daubers might have done you a favor by plugging the barrel with their nest. Run a bore brush down it, then a few patches and take a look - if there's no pitting, then you just need to clean up the exterior.
