A buddy of mine said he heard from a friend of his dad's (what a hearsay) that sometime during the Obama admin they started manufacturing civilian use ammunition with deteriorating gunpowder to deter stockpiling. I read about rumors of this back in '08 when he took office too but nothing ever really came of it. Thoughts? Truth? Myth? Utter BS?

    Out here by the lake!
I have a few ammo cans as do friends of mine. Something goes on with ammo in cans as they make noises like there is expansion.

Then again I have had combat packs in the heavy poly bags that have tight vaccums & show no expansion.

I also have ammunition in wooden crates that are from the 70’s. The ammunition is the same condition as it was in the 70’s.

As far as commercial ammunition made in the Obummer era I really can’t say. At some point in time they started adding taggerts to explosives to help track bombings.

Stupid for asking a question? Relax, brother.

    Wasn't referring to you.
    The powder thing is incorrect.
In the gun world there can be some incredibly silly theories.
    Examples would be:
Pumping a shotgun scares away Godzilla.
A .22lr bullet goes into the human body and "bounces all around" doing great damage.
Academy gun counter employees know what they're talking about.
    Powder manufactured to break down.
Powder can deteriorate if not stored properly.
I have powder that is easily 25yrs old and is still very much usable. I've used some black powder that was 60yrs old and worked just fine.
The same conspiracy was told about primers back in the Clinton years. Primers would go dead after so many months. It was B.S. made up to sell more primers.

If anything, powder has been improved. The big contracts aren't for reloaders - they're for military use. Newer powders tend to be cleaner, less affected by ambient temperatures, and in some cases they reduce copper fouling.

If you have doubts, consider this: Was obama smart enough to do something that exotic? Nothing he did in 8 years indicates to me that he has an IQ in more than 2 digits.

The Obama thing sounds like pure BS but wasn't there some recall recently where one of the powder companies said that if there was a strange smell at the powder that was a sign of deterioration and one needed to fill container with water and dispose of it? I have never seen it but doesn't Vihtavuori give their stuff a 10 year life?

Your being generous with 2 digits! The new guy is even lower!

In 1993, Senator Moynihan was after primers:

There are no shortage of methods they would love to have for gun control.

One I recall they wanted years ago, was micro-stamping of the firing pins of guns so that if used in a criminal act, it could be traced. Hmmm....
